
Chinooks Top Honkers in Series Opener

(Rochester,MN) - The Lakeshore Chinooks defeated the Rochester Honkers 8-4 on Wednesday, July 31, at Kapco Park in Mequon, WI, to begin a two-game series between the two teams.
Reid Roper (Illinois) reached on a one-out single in the top of the second inning. He advanced to second base when Jared Deacon (Cal State Fullerton) was hit by a pitch and scored on a two-out single from Mike Friel (Hofstra) to give the Honkers a 1-0 lead.
Eli Roundtree was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the third inning for the Chinooks. Andrew Stevenson followed with a two-out single to set up a three-run homerun for Sawyer Polen to take a 3-1 lead after three innings.
Lakeshore added to its lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to a RBI double from Polen.
Kevin Barker (UC Davis) and Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) drew back-to-back walks to start the top of the sixth inning. Both runners advanced on a double steal to give Rochester two runners in scoring position with no outs. Barker scored on a RBI groundout from Max Murphy (Bradley,) but Hanawahine was left at third base. Friel reached on a fielder's choice in the seventh inning and eventually scored on an error to cut the Honkers deficit to one run at 4-3.
The Chinooks responded with a four-run inning in the bottom of the seventh to increase their lead to 8-3 after seven innings. The inning was boosted by run-scoring hits from Mike Papi and Aaron Machbitz.
Murphy singled to start the eighth inning and scored on a RBI single from Roper for the last Honkers run of the night. Roper led the Honkers offense with a pair of hits.
Joe Pavlovich earned the win (2-0) for Lakeshore, as he allowed two runs on two hits in five innings of work. Matt Kent (Texas A&M) took the loss (4-3) for Rochester. He allowed four runs on five hits, while striking out seven, in six innings. Jeff Campbell (North Dakota) tossed 1.2 scoreless innings in relief for the Honkers.
The two teams will finish up a two-game series on Thursday, August 1, at 6:35 p.m. in Mequon, WI. Tyler Eppler (Sam Houston State) is scheduled to start for Rochester (4-20, 22-37.) After the series with the Chinooks, the Honkers will play a pair of games in St. Cloud and Thunder Bay before returning home on Tuesday, August 6, to begin a six-game home stand that will conclude the regular season.
