Willmar Stingers News Release

GREEN BAY, Wis. - A pair of slow starts sunk the chances of the Willmar Stingers against the Green Bay Bull Frogs. The first game, which was suspended Sunday, was resumed with the game tied in the top of the 9th inning, but the Stingers gave up a pair of runs in the home half of the inning, losing the game 10-9. The second game began much the same as the first, with a flurry of runs for the Bull Frogs in the early innings.

In both games, the Stingers fought back from early deficits, giving themselves chances to win each game. The first contest had the Stingers behind by as many as seven runs. With the score 8-1, Willmar mustered a run in the 7th inning and tied the game with a six-run explosion in the 8th. The inning began with a Logan Moon (Missouri Southern) double and an RBI base hit for Tyler Leffler. Then, after a fielder's choice in which the Bull Frogs failed to record an out and a base hit by Marc Flores, Leffler (Bradley) scored when Michael Suchy was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Jake Gronsky (Monmouth) then recorded his second hit after entering the game as pinch hitter, scoring Zack Tillery (Florida Gulf Coast) from third and loading the bases once again. With the score 8-5 and Gronsky representing the tying run at first, Colton Bottomley collected another big hit. Bottomley drove a ball to the gap in left that scored Flores (Hawaii), Suchy (Florida Gulf Coast) and Gronsky to cap the remarkable comeback.

After Cody Hughes (Montevallo) entered the game and shut down the Bull Frogs in the bottom of the 8th, the umpries decided that playing conditions had deteriorated too much from persistent rainfall and suspended play until Tuesday. Despite the 10-9 loss, Colton Bottomley earned CDI player of the game in the first contest, finishing 2-for-4 with the game-tying hit in the 8th.

In the second game, Green Bay once again bolted out to an early lead. The Bull Frogs led 5-0 after two innings and the Stingers trailed 6-1 heading into the top of the 7th. Flores smacked a base hit up the right field line with runners at the corners and one out to record his team-leading 50th RBI. The next batter, Suchy, then unleashed a mammoth home run so far over the fence that it ought to have been measured in miles or kilometers. The three-run shot pulled the Stingers to within one, but the Bull Frogs bullpen steadied and shut out the Stingers for the remained of the game to preserve the win and the series sweep.

Danny Brennan earned the honors of being CDI player of the game in the nightcap, finishing 3-for-4 with a triple, a walk and two runs scored.

Next, the Stingers travel to Madison on the fifth day of an eight-day road trip for a pair of games.
