Chihuahuas Win in Series Opener

August 2, 2023 - Pacific Coast League (PCL)
Salt Lake Bees News Release

David Fletcher saw his 24-game hit streak snapped as the Salt Lake Bees (10-18) fell to the El Paso Chihuahuas (14-14) 6-1 in Tuesday's series opener at Smith's Ballpark. Fletcher went 0-for-4 at the plate and ends tied with Nathan Haynes (2002) for the franchise record..

El Paso jumped on Salt Lake starter Cesar Valdez early scoring a pair of runs in the first and another three runs in the second. Things looked dire for Salt Lake when El Paso loaded the bases in the third, but Valdez handled a 97 MPH comebacker with ease to escape the jam. Salt Lake got the offense going in the third as David Fletcher and Brandon Drury, with the Bees on MLB Rehab Assignment, pulled off a double steal and provoked an errant throw that allowed Fletcher to score and Drury to advance another 90 feet. The game would remain at 5-1 El Paso for the next three frames until the Chihuahuas added another run on a double off the wall in the 7th inning. Orlando Martinez doubled to lead off the ninth to try and spark a Bees comeback but was left stranded. Martinez finished the night with a pair of hits for Salt Lake's only multi-hit performance.

Valdez earned his fifth loss of the year on the mound, allowing all six earned runs and 13 hits in his six innings before relievers Jimmy Herget and Andrew Wantz combined to produce a scoreless three-inning outing for the Bees bullpen. Salt Lake, outhit 15 to 5 by the Chihuahuas, has now lost six consecutive contests, tied for their longest drought of the 2023 campaign.

The Bees return to action at 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday in Smith's Ballpark against El Paso for the second of a six-game series to be played this week.
