Reno Aces News Release
Sacramento, CA - Sergio Alcantára's first homer with the Reno Aces (13-16, 57-47) came in a crucial moment in a 9-6 win over the Sacramento River Cats (11-18, 45-58) Wednesday afternoon at Sutter Health Park.
Trailing by one with Ali Sánchez on first in the eighth inning, Alcántara smacked a 2-1 pitch to left center field to give Reno a 7-6 lead. Alcántara joined the team this week and is making an immediate impact. Buddy Kennedy added insurance with a solo blast two at-bats later, his fifth of the season. It was Kennedy's first homer since May 24th, a span of 38 games.
Blaze Alexander got the Aces cooking with an RBI single to right in the second, continuing an outstanding start to the series. Alexander has driven in six runs over his last four games and now has 31 RBI in just 41 games this season. Phillip Evans hit a key three-run homer in the fifth, pulling the Aces within one and setting the stage for the heroic eighth frame.
Austin Pope made his Triple-A debut in relief and recorded his first four strikeouts across two hitless frames. Pope struck out 56 in 44 2/3 innings in a high leverage role for the Sod Poodles, regularly pitching in the eighth and ninth innings. Drafted by the Diamondbacks in the 15th round in 2019, Pope is the seventh Aces pitcher to make their Triple-A debut this season.
The Aces and River Cats continue their series Thursday night at 6:45 p.m. PT.
