Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Albuquerque, NM - The penultimate homestand of the season got off to a rough start for the Albuquerque Isotopes, who dropped a 14-3 decision to the El Paso Chihuahuas in the opener of a seven-game series Tuesday night. The Chihuahuas used four different three-run frames to pull away.
El Paso (70-59) got on the board quickly, when Brett Sullivan came through with a two-out RBI single in the first inning.
After scoring again in the second, the Chihuahuas broke it open with a three-run third. Luis Liberato hustled his way to an RBI double, then Brandon Dixon crushed a 459-foot homer that bounced off the top of the scoreboard in left-center, which made it 5-0.
Albuquerque (56-71) missed numerous chances to put up a crooked number against El Paso starter Jay Groome. They squandered a bases-loaded, nobody out opportunity in the second, then plated just one run in the third despite drawing a pair of walks to start the frame. The tally came courtesy of an RBI double by Coco Montes. In the fourth, Taylor Snyder singled home a run, but a double play ended that frame with two on.
The Chihuahuas widened the gap to 8-2 in the fifth, keyed by RBI hits from Brett Sullivan and C.J. Hinojosa. The Isotopes were again unable to capitalize on a golden situation in the bottom half. Groome walked the first two batters but then retired the next three, stranding two more.
In the sixth, Brandon Dixon doubled home two runs as part of another three-run frame as El Paso pushed the lead to 11-2.
Wynton Bernard picked up an RBI on a base hit to center field in the sixth, which brought home Jimmy Herron.
J.D. Hammer had a rough seventh inning on the mound for Albuquerque, giving up three home runs - solo blasts to Kyle Martin, Thomas Milone and Liberato.
Topes Scope: - Riley Smith took the loss after surrendering eight runs in five innings. In three appearances against El Paso this season, Smith is 0-2 with a 16.88 ERA (25 ER/13.1 IP) and 31 hits allowed.
- Smith tied for the third-most runs allowed by an Isotopes starter this year. It was the eighth time a hurler has given up eight runs, most recently suffered by Corey Oswalt on July 23 vs. Sugar Land.
- Tonight was the 30th time Albuquerque has allowed 10 or more runs in a game this season. They are 0-30 in such contests.
- After the quartet of three-run innings put up by the Chihuahuas tonight, the Isotopes have surrendered three or more runs in a frame 139 times this season.
- Bernard tallied his team-leading 36th multi-hit game of the season. He has recorded at least one RBI in 36 of 92 games at Triple-A.
- Jimmy Herron was 2-for-4, his sixth multi-hit contest as an Isotope.
- Taylor Snyder is 6-for-17 over his last four games. Tonight was his seventh multi-hit performance with Albuquerque this season.
- The blasts by Martin and Milone marked the eighth time Albuquerque has allowed back-to-back homers in 2022, and the first since Corey Julks and Taylor Jones on July 23 vs. Sugar Land.
- Hammer has allowed 10 runs over 6.2 innings across his last four appearances, and has seen his season ERA balloon from 4.34 to 5.73.
- Albuquerque has been outscored 72-27 during their six-game home losing streak. This is their longest skid at Isotopes Park since they dropped six in a row from May 20-29, 2019.
- The Isotopes are 3-10 in games decided by 10 or more runs, including 1-4 at home.
- Groome threw 103 pitches, the most by an opposing starter against Albuquerque this season.
- Albuquerque allowed their third-most runs ever in a contest during the month of September. The most came on Sept. 1, 2007, in a 20-6 loss vs. Oklahoma.
- This was the first game to last over three hours at Isotopes Park since July 30 vs. Las Vegas (3:13), a span of 13 contests.
On Deck: The Isotopes and Chihuahuas will meet for a doubleheader Wednesday beginning at 4:05 p.m. Right-handed pitchers Brandon Gold and Ashton Goudeau are scheduled to start for Albuquerque, against right-hander Pedro Avila and left-hander Aaron Leasher for El Paso, respectively.
