Chigbogu Powers Loons to Victory

Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - During his Dow Diamond debut, Isaac Anderson pitched a gem and his team's offense took care of the rest.
Anderson posted sparkling numbers as the Great Lakes Loons (52-49) clinched a series win with a 5-0 victory over the South Bend Cubs on Wednesday night at Dow Diamond.
Anderson allowed just three hits, struck out two batters and allowed no walks during five innings pitched as he claimed his first win of the season.
Offensively, Great Lakes slugger Justin Chigbogu provided the spark the home team needed to get the job done. Chigbogu was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in including a single that scored two put-away runs during the bottom of the 7th inning.
A major key to the Loons' success lately has been their ability to score early in the game. Great Lakes and Chigbogu kept that momentum going in game two of a three-game midweek series.
Infielder Matt Beaty drove a one-out double into the right field foul pole corner and advanced to third base on a wild pitch during the bottom of the 2nd inning. Beaty came around to score when Chigbogu clobbered a booming fly ball off the left centerfield wall to give Great Lakes an early 1-0 lead.
The Cubs (45-55) put two base runners on during the top half of the next inning, but Anderson neutralized the threat. The Loons cushioned their lead during the middle innings with more solid hitting.
During the bottom of the 5th inning, Great Lakes managed to load the bases and sent infielder Kelvin Ramos to the plate. Ramos notched a clutch base hit that dropped mere feet in front of Cubs outfielder Rashad Crawford, scoring Chigbogu and fellow infielder Nick Dean.
Anderson kept the Cubs offense off balance for the remainder of his time on the mound before handing the ball to the bullpen. South Bend starter Trevor Clifton took the loss.
The Loons send newcomer Tommy Bergjans (0-1 6.00 ERA) to the mound on Thursday night for the third and final game of the homestand. He will oppose Cubs starter Michael Wagner (2-1, 2.61 ERA).
Every Thursday is $1 Family Feast Night at Dow Diamond. Enjoy hot dogs, 16 oz. Pepsi fountain products, ice cream sandwiches and Better Made Chips, all for just $1 each, all night long.
The Great Lakes Loons are a ninth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
