Dayton Dragons News Release

Fort Wayne, Ind.-Franmil Reyes hit a grand slam home run and Trae Santos collected five hits including a home run as the Fort Wayne TinCaps defeated the Dayton Dragons 14-1 on Thursday night. The TinCaps have won the first two games of the three-game series.

Despite the lopsided final, the first half of the game was played evenly, tied 1-1 after four and one-half innings. But Fort Wayne took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, then added five runs in the seventh and six more in the eighth to close out the scoring.

For the fourth straight game, the Dragons scored in the top of the first inning. Cory Thompson tripled to left-center field with out and scored on Gavin LaValley's groundout to second base to make it 1-0. Fort Wayne tied the game in the second, then took advantage of two Dragons errors in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead.

The Dragons had a chance for a productive seventh inning, still trailing by only two runs. They loaded the bases with one out on a single by Argenis Aldazoro, a hit batsman, and a walk to Chadwick Tromp. But Luis Gonzalez popped out to shallow right and Ty Washington flied to center to end the threat. Fort Wayne then collected five hits and sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the seventh to extend their lead to 8-1.

In the eighth, Reyes homered with three men on base to make it 12-1. One out later, Luis Tejada belted a home run to left, and Santos followed with a homer to right to make it 14-1.

Dragons starting pitcher Tejay Antone (5-8) suffered the loss. He worked six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Reliever Jacob Moody replaced Antone and allowed four runs (two earned) in two-thirds of an inning. Jeremy Kivel tossed the final one and one-third innings, surrendering seven runs including three home runs.

The Dragons finished with seven hits. Thompson and Aldazoro each had two.

With the loss, the Dragons fell to three games out of first place. They are tied for fifth with South Bend in the East Division with 37 games to play.

The Dragons (16-17 in the second half; 55-48 overall) and TinCaps (18-15, 50-51) close out the three-game series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Junior Morillo (3-5, 5.85) will start for the Dragons against Fort Wayne's LH Travis Radke (0-0, 1.50). The Dragons open a new three-game series on Friday at Fifth Third Field in Dayton against the South Bend Cubs at 7:00 p.m.
