Chiefs Ring in the New Year in Style with Season-High 11 Goals

Kennewick, Wash. - Spokane made the short trek down to face the Americans on the road on Sunday night, looking to ring in the new year with a fourth straight win.

The first period had a fair share of action with the two teams trading penalties, and power play goals early on. Tri-City got on the board first thanks to the first career WHL goal from Jackson Smith.

Layton Feist would answer with a blast from the blue line to bring the scores level.

Later in the period it was Berkly Catton driving the net to create another scoring chance. After multiple shots it was Conner Roulette finally finding the goal for his team leading 24th of the season.

The first period would head to intermission with the score 2-1 in favor of the Chiefs for the second consecutive night between the two teams.

Frame two went the way of the first. Tri-City scored first, with a goal from Andrew Fan at 5:20.

Chase Bertholet would answer with two goals in just a 32 second span. His first goal appeared to ricochet off the bar, but after review it was called good. Catton was credited with the lone assist on the play. Moments later Bertholet would jump on a loose puck, drive the length of the ice, and roof the puck with a confident blast over the goaltenders glove.

After two the Chiefs would lead 4-2 with 27 shots versus 25 for the Americans.

The third period would escalate incredibly quickly.

It was another milestone moment as Owen Schoettler found the net through a crowd for his first career WHL goal, unassisted at 2:59.

Another Chiefs defencemen would score next with Saige Weinstein beating everyone down the ice and tapping in on the backhand.

Parker Bell would score at 7:34 to make it a 6-3 game in favor of Spokane but the Chiefs would go on to score five unanswered goals to blow this game out of the water.

Owen Martin scored twice, with a Coco Armstrong finish sandwiched in between. For Martin it was his 9th and 10th of the season and Armstrong is now up to four on the year.

Chase Bertholet was next on the board for his first career WHL hat trick.

The Chiefs' veteran finished 2023 scorching hot with five goals and nine points over the last two nights.

Will McIsaac was the final goal scorer of the night, finding the net for just the second time this season and fourth of his young career.

The Chiefs tallied 11 goals with eight different goal scorers.

Chase Bertholet led the way with five points (3G, 2A) while Berkly Catton had three assists.

Owen Martin (2G), Owen Schoettler (1G, 1A), Will McIsaac (1G, 1A), Layton Feist (1G, 1A), and Saige Weinstein (1G, 1A) would all record two points and 15 (!) Chiefs' skaters would record at least one point in this contest.

Cooper Michaluk was a force in net, making key saves to keep the momentum going for Spokane. The Chiefs' goaltender made 38 saves after not featuring in net since December 15th.

Spokane was 3-4 on the power play, 3-5 on the penalty kill and led the shot count 43-41.
