Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Everett, WA - The Edmonton Oil Kings extended their point streak to five games (4-0-1-0) on Monday afternoon by ringing in the New Year with a thrilling 6-5 win over the Everett Silvertips at the Angel of the Winds Arena.
A busy first period saw the Oil Kings get outshot 20-7 by the Silvertips but an opportunist effort by the visitors had the game tied at two through 20 minutes.
For a fifth straight game, the Oil Kings opened the scoring as Gavin Hodnett collected his sixth goal of the season at 13:48 of the period after Skyler Bruce pried a puck free along the end boards of the Everett zone and found Hodnett wide-open in front of the net where he snapped a shot past the glove of Ethan Chadwick.
The Silvertips responded with two goals 1:13 apart to take a 2-1 lead as both Carter Bear and Julius Miettinen cleaned up rebounds in front of the Edmonton net with 1:32 left on the clock.
With just 14 seconds left in the period though, Edmonton was able to level the score as Marc Lajoie notched his 12th goal of the season on a 5-on-3 power play after Bruce found him open in the right-circle where he was able to hammer home a one-timer.
In the second period, the Oil Kings took a 3-2 lead 3:11 into the middle stanza after Andrej Tomasec setup Cole Miller on an odd-man rush into the Silvertips zone for Miller's third goal of the season.
Everett countered again with two quick goals of their own and both provided by Beau Courtney in the span of 2:05 just after the midway mark of the period.
The Oil Kings were able to tie the game again after Parker Alcos registered his first career WHL goal after being setup at the backdoor on a feed from Marshall Finnie with 3:04 left in the frame.
With just over a minute left in the period though, the Silvertips took their turn getting a late period power play goal after Bear tipped in his second goal of the game off a point shot from Tarin Smith to give the home side a 5-4 lead at the second intermission.
In the third period, the Oil Kings would rally for two goals to pickup their third win of the season when trailing after two periods of play and their second against the Silvertips.
The Oil Kings tied the score with 6:42 left in regulation as former Silvertip Roan Woodward took a centering pass from Bruce and knifed it five-hole on Chadwick for his seventh goal of the season.
As the clock wound down and the game looked destined for overtime, Ty Nash had other ideas after he took a backdoor pass from Gracyn Sawchyn and elevated the puck into the top shelf with just seven seconds left to give the Oil Kings the 6-5 victory with his 11th goal of the season.
Kolby Hay finished the night making 38 saves for his fourth straight win, while Chadwick turned in 14 for the Silvertips. Edmonton went 1-for-4 on the power play, Everett was 1-for-2.
