Clinton, IA - The Peoria Chiefs took the lead in the eighth inning but spoiled seven strong innings from Cory Jones with a 3-2 setback to the Clinton LumberKings on a walk-off sacrifice fly Wednesday night. The loss eliminates the 34-29 Chiefs from the first half playoff race as they sit five games behind Beloit with only four games remaining.

The Chiefs left five runners on base and hit into two double plays in the first four innings while Clinton left three on, hit into a double play and had a runner caught stealing. Peoria grabbed the lead in the fifth against Matt Anderson. Ildemaro Vargas singled with two outs and Jacob Wilson followed with a single to right center. As Vargas sped to third, Gaby Guerrero bobbled the ball in right and his throw home bounced and was not caught by Tyler Marlette as Vargas slid in for the 1-0 lead.

Cory Jones kept the LumberKings off the board through five innings with just four singles allowed. Clinton tied the game in the sixth on a solo homer by Janelfry Zorilla. Zorilla has hit four home runs this season and three of them have been against the Chiefs.

Peoria took the lead 2-1 in the eighth when Wilson launched his ninth home run of the season to straightaway center field with one out. The lead was short-lived as the first three LumberKings singled against Michael Aldrete in the bottom of the game to tie the game. Clinton loaded the bases on a pair of walks but Aldrete struck out Tyler Marlette to end the frame.

Jimmy Parque singled for the Chiefs to start the ninth inning and eventually moved to third with two outs. However Matt Vedo got Vargas to groundout and end the frame. Gaby Guerrero greeted Dixon Llorens with a single in the bottom of the ninth and Jordy Lara doubled past a diving Parque in right field. Llorens intentionally walked Tim Lopes to load the bases and Zorilla won the game with a sacrifice fly to deep right.

Jones allowed one run on six hits over seven innings in his second straight quality start. The right-hander struck out two and hit one with no walks. Aldrete allowed one run on three hits and two walks with one strikeout in his lone inning. Llorens (1-2) allowed one run on two hits and a walk in 1/3 of an inning.
