Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Kevin Patterson blasted a pair of home runs and Taylor Cole pitched a gem as the Lansing Lugnuts (30-35) won 6-2 against the South Bend Silver Hawks (43-22) on Wednesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.
With two on in the bottom of the first, Patterson cleared every single fence at Cooley Law School Stadium, hitting a line-drive home run out to right to give Lansing a 3-0 lead. The ball landed all the way out on Larch Street, running north past the right field line at Cooley.
Then, after Christian Lopes hit a sacrifice fly to score Dalton Pompey in the fifth frame that gave the Lugs a 5-1 lead, Patterson crushed a moonshot out to right-center for his 11th home run of the season and his second multi-homer game of the year.
Patterson finished 3-for-4 at the plate with the two home runs and four RBIs, supplying more than enough offense for the Lugnuts pitching staff.
Cole (Win, 4-4) twirled seven innings on the mound in the start for Lansing, giving up just two runs on five scattered hits. He tied season and career highs with seven strikeouts and pounded the strike-zone from pitch number one, not issuing a single walk.
The only two runs allowed by Cole were both solo homers by Breland Almadova in the third and Rudy Flores in the sixth, as the normally pitcher-friendly Cooley Law School Stadium turned into a launch pad on a humid, muggy night in Lansing.
Ian Kadish pitched a perfect eighth and Arik Sikula pitched the ninth.
South Bend starter Blake Perry (Loss, 3-3) took the loss, giving up all six Lugnuts runs in five innings of work. He allowed six hits, struck out three and walked a pair.
The series finale and rubber match is set for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on a Labatt Blue Light Thirsty Thursday. The Lugnuts will send right-hander Ben White (3-3, 2.94) against South Bend's Kyle Winkler (1-0, 2.25).
