
Chiang Extends Hit Streak to 15 Games

Portland, Maine- Kyle McPherson and two relievers held the powerful Sea Dogs offense to one run and five runs as the Altoona Curve (46-60) defeated the Portland Sea Dogs (44-62) 5-1 Saturday night before a crowd of 7,242 fans at Hadlock Field.
The Sea Dogs entered the game as the league's top hitting team with a .274 average but Kyle McPherson (5-3) shut down the Sea Dogs tossing 6.2 brilliant innings to earn his fifth Double-A win. McPherson, a 2011 Florida State League All-Star held the Sea Dogs to one run on four hits. He struck out a season high ten batters and surrendered one walk. The righty was selected by the Pirates in the 14th round of the of the 2007 draft.
The lone Portland run Portland was able to manufacturer off McPherson came in the third inning when Ryan Dent doubled followed by a Jeremy Hazelbaker single and Chih-Hsien Chiang picked-up his league leading 76th RBI when Dent scored on his groundout.
Chiang singled in the first to extend his hit streak to 15 games.
The Curve offense jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first when Tony Sanchez ripped a RBI double scoring Starling Marte, who reached when he was hit by a Brock Huntzinger pitch.
The Pirates affiliate broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth when Yunesky Sanchez delivered a RBI single scoring Matt Curry. Greg Picart added a sacrifice fly to right scoring Quincy Latimore.
Marte chipped-in with a RBI single in the ninth to extend the Curve lead to 5-1.
Huntzinger (5-9) suffered the loss allowing three runs on seven hits in five innings.
Anthony Claggett and Noah Krol both pitched well in relief of McPherson. Claggett tossed 1.1 hitless innings and Krol threw a scoreless ninth to preserve the Curve victory.
Jeremy Hazelbaker stole his 20th base of the season for the Sea Dogs in the third inning.
The series and homestand will conclude Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM. Right-handed pitcher Chris Balcom-Miller (2-4, 4.50) will get the start for the Sea Dogs. Altoona will send righty Aaron Pribanic (6-8, 4.30) to the hill. The Sea Dogs will open the gates at 10:00 AM to allow fans to play catch on the field until 11:15 AM.
