Erie SeaWolves News Release

The SeaWolves tossed their second straight shutout on Saturday night at Canal Park, taking down the Akron Aeros 5-0. It was Erie's sixth shutout of the season and the ‘Wolves have now won back-to-back games for the first time in July.

Erie broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth against Akron reliever Adam Miller. Deik Scram and Bryan Holaday each singled to start the inning. Jamie Johnson singled home Scram for a 1-0 Erie lead. With two outs, Ben Guez singled home Holaday, giving the ‘Wolves a 2-0 advantage.

The SeaWolves extended their lead in the sixth. Bryan Pounds led off, singled, and was brought home on an Audy Ciriaco triple for a 3-0 edge. Cale Iorg was hit by a pitch putting runners on the corners. Scram singed home Ciriaco for a 4-0 lead and Johnson singled home Iorg with one out for a 5-0 lead.

The five-run edge was more than enough for the SeaWolves pitching staff, led by Drew Smyly (1-0) making his Double-A debut. Smyly, the Tigers second rounder from the 2010 draft out of Arkansas, tossed seven shutout innings allowing four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Austin Wood completed the shutout tossing the final two innings allowing one hit with a walk and three strikeouts.

The SeaWolves go for the series win on Sunday afternoon at Canal Park...1:05 First Pitch.
