Charlotte Checkers News Release

Gwinnett, G.A. - The Checkers battled the Gwinnett Gladiators for the third time this season and lost by a score of 5-1.

It was a rough first period for Charlotte and for the second consecutive game, the Checkers allowed a goal during the first shift. It only took 33 seconds for Mike Vigilante to put the Gladiators up when he redirected a shot from the blueline past, Mike Ayers. Later, it was Tomas Pospisil who tailed a power play goal extending the Gladiators lead to 2-0 at 8:22. Gwinnett would get goals from both Andy Brandt and Jamie Milam (power play) to end the period with a 4-0 advantage.

There were no goals by either team in the second stanza but, the Gladiators got another goal by Brandt in the third extending the lead to 5-0. The Checkers only score came at 12:08 when Mark Lee streaked down the left wing boards and fed Dusty Jamieson who poked the puck past Gladiators netminder, Dan Turple to break his shutout bid.

Notes: The Checkers only had one power play chance and didn't score while the Gladiators scored twice on five attempts...Turple turned aside 27 of 28 and Ayers stopped 29 of 34...Ayers became the eighth goaltender to play for Charlotte this season.

The Checkers are in their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Their next home game takes place on Dec. 15 against the Columbia Inferno. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers will enter their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena this fall. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $399.
