Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers made opening night at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena one that will not soon be forgotten. Hugh Jessiman turned in a hat trick in front of 8,317 fans Sunday in his second game in as many days in a Checkers uniform as Charlotte rolled over South Carolina 7-2.

Jessiman's scored the first goal of the game at the 3:36 mark in the opening frame. His second and third goals came less than two minutes apart at the mid-way point of the third period to give the Checkers a 5-2 cushion and the Checkers their first player to record a hat trick this season. Jessiman was named the number one star of the game just three days after being reassigned to Charlotte by Hartford.

South Carolina claimed an early 2-1 lead after a late-first-period goal by Dave Spina and second-period goal by Marty Clapton.

The Checkers answered back with a goal from Blake Bellefeuille 51 seconds following the Stingrays go-ahead goal and Lee Falardeau banked the game-winner on one of the craftiest moves you will see in the ECHL.

Falardeau crossed up the Stingrays defenseman as he turned 360 degrees while skating through the attack zone. Falardeau then found the back of the net as he moved right to left across the crease leaving Stingrays goalie Maxime Daigneault glued to the right post.

The Checkers rounded out the scoring and stars of the game as Dusty Jamieson and Steve MacIntyre were named the number two and three stars of the game, respectively, after scoring a goal each. Kenton Smith racked up four assists while Ryan Cuthbert registered two.

MacIntyre picked up his first goal as a Checker this season in his fourth game since being assigned to the team last week by Harford.

The Checkers, now 5-0-1, are the only remaining team in the ECHL without a loss in regulation as Reading fell to Toledo 2-1 Sunday.

The Checkers next game at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena will be 7:00 pm, Tuesday, November 6th as they will host the Gwinnett Gladiators. For more information on the Charlotte Checkers visit www.gocheckers.com.
