Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - It will be nice for the Victoria Salmon Kings to return home on Monday knowing that for the next two weeks teams will be coming to them. Victoria lost 7-3 to the North Division leading Wheeling Nailers on Sunday, in Victoria's first matinee of the season.

For the second straight game the Salmon Kings got out to a quick start. Defenseman Kurt Drummond opened the score sheet with his first goal of the season before two minutes had burned off the clock.

Forward Mike Henderson continued his goal scoring ways notching his third, in his first four games with the Salmon Kings. At 7:35, Henderson picked up a loose puck to right of Nailers Goaltender Andy Chiodo, beating him to extend Victoria's lead to two.

The Nailers are an explosive team and showed their offensive prowess scoring six unanswered goals (Sean Collins, Kurtis McLean, Mike Doyle, Terry Virtue, Eric Sonnenberg and Jordan Cameron) between the 10:57 mark of the opening period and 7:03 of the third, when Salmon Kings Captain Ryan Wade scored his second goal of the campaign to cut the Nailers lead in half at 6-3. Wade finished the game with a goal and an assist which moves him to five points (2g-3a) so far this season.

Nailers Forward Kurtis McLean may wish to play all afternoon games as he beat Salmon Kings Goaltender Rob Muntain for Wheeling's final goal, and his second of the game. McLean finished the game with two goals and two assists for four points.

The Nailers were sizzling on the powerplay converting three of their four opportunities while the Salmon Kings unit was held off the score sheet for the first time on the east coast.

Muntain was relieved briefly by BJ Boxma who finished the second period in Victoria's net, as Head Coach Bryan Maxwell looked shake things up. Muntain returned to start the third and finished the game. The Nailers out-shot the Salmon Kings 26-19 in front of an announced attendance of 2042.

The game was delayed 90 minutes due to a power outage in the building, but rather than re-schedule a game between two teams on opposite sides of the continent, they waited it out and power was restored in time to start the game at 12:30pm PST.

The Salmon Kings will have their last travel day of this trip on Monday. They return home to Vancouver Island to host the Stockton Thunder on Thursday November 10th, their first game in the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
