Falcons Make it a Six-Point Weekend

Fresno Falcons News Release

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno Falcons won for the third time in three days by defeating the Bakersfield Condors at Save Mart Center, 6-2, on the strength of two power play goals from Shawn Mather and 31 saves from rookie goaltender Mike Brown in his first professional start.

Fresno's Brett Hammond sparked the club in the early going when he set-up Fraser Clair with a pretty drop pass at 6:51 and then tallied a goal of his own just 22 seconds later to give the Falcons a 2-0 edge through 20 minutes.

Mather scored the first of his two power play markers 30 seconds into the middle period, but Bakersfield answered 26 seconds later to keep it a two-goal game off a blast from the left circle by Michel Massie. The Falcons have had trouble holding leads this season, and it looked like the Condors might claw their way back into the game as they skated on the power play shortly thereafter. Fresno's Rob McFeeters snuffed out any chance of a comeback, though, when he blocked a shot and sprung Kelsey Muench for a shorthanded goal at 4:03. McFeeters then banged home a rebound for his first of the season just 36 seconds later to extend the Falcons' lead to 5-1. Mather book-ended the team's four-goal second with another power play goal at 17:31 to give Fresno an insurmountable 6-1 edge heading to the third.

Bakersfield's Alexandre Bolduc scored mid-way through the final period, but the visitors never seriously threatened the Falcons' lead the rest of the way.

Brown, who was acquired on Friday from the Stockton Thunder to fill the void left by fellow rookie netminder Jamie Holden's call-up to the American Hockey League's Cleveland Barons, looked sharp as he made his first start following a four-year career at Ferris State.

Following a pair of shootout victories on Friday and last night against Stockton and the Long Beach Ice Dogs, respectively, the Falcons' 6-2 win this evening gives them a 6-1-1 record and a six-point lead over second place Bakersfield and Long Beach in the Pacific Division.

Fresno next heads to Las Vegas for its first meeting of the year with the Wranglers on Tuesday at The Orleans Arena. The game can be heard live on 1550 Sporting News Radio with the FutureTek Pre-game Show beginning at 6:45 p.m. Fans may also watch the game over the internet courtesy of B2 Networks on a pay-per-view basis via the team's website at www.fresnofalcons.com.
