Gulls Weekly Update
November 6, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO -- The long road trip to start the season is finally over and the San Diego Gulls can now rely on some good old-fashioned home cooking. The Gulls split points in three games last week and finally had a chance to play in front of their home crowd... and what a crowd it was.
WEEK IN REVIEW:
Nov. 2 @ Long Beach:
The Ice Dogs scored three times in a 4:33 span in the second period en route to a 5-0 whitewashing of San Diego. Former Gull Max Birbraer, Mike Vellinga and Christian Larrivee each notched a goal and two assists. Rookie netminder Jaroslav Halak, making his first professional start, stopped all 22 shots for his first career shutout.
Nov. 4 @ Bakersfield:
The Gulls out-shot Bakersfield 50-28 and came back from an early two-goal deficit to beat the Condors 5-4 in a shootout. San Diego trailed 3-1 after the first period, but out-shot Bakersfield 45-14 (27-7 in the second period) the rest of the game and eventually won it on Jesse Bennefield's goal in the fifth round of the shootout. Darren Clark, Guillaume Fournier, Steve Hildenbrand and Pierre-Luc Sleigher scored for the Gulls in regulation while Tom Lawson stopped 24 shots (three of four in the shootout) en route to his first win.
Nov. 5 vs. Stockton:
A standing room only crowd of 13,001 filled the ipayOne Center for San Diego's home opener, only to see the Gulls fall 4-3 in overtime to Stockton. Steve Slonina scored 53 seconds into the extra frame and netminder Jake Moreland stopped 39 shots en route to the Thunder's victory. Frantisek Skladany led San Diego offensively with his first two goals with the Blue and Orange.
Individual Notes:
Tyler Weiman has the fourth most saves in the ECHL (178)... Fournier and Hildenbrand lead the Gulls with five points apiece (3g, 2a)... Sleigher has the second most shots on goal in the ECHL (42)...
Team Notes:
The Gulls home opener drew a standing room only crowd of 13,001. That's the largest crowd in their history, dating back to 1995... San Diego's penalty killing ranks last in the ECHL (70.2 percent)... The Gulls have scored four power-play goals in the last two games, but still ranks 21st in the league (11.7 percent)...
The Gulls return to action Saturday in Fresno, with game-time set for 7 p.m. from Save Mart Center. San Diego hosts the Phoenix Roadrunners Sunday at 5:05 p.m. It will be the first Kids Night and "Skate with the Gulls" will immediately follow the game. All games can be heard on KLSD 1360AM and www.sandiegogulls.com with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. Most games can also be viewed on the Gulls' web site, courtesy of B2 Networks (Both games this week CAN BE VIEWED).
