Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Toledo Storm played host to the Victoria Salmon Kings at the tiny Toledo Sports Arena tonight, in a game which Victoria jumped out to an early two goal lead. The Storm out lasted the Salmon Kings though, winning 5-3.

Two words explain the evening well, special teams. The Salmon Kings scored two powerplay goals and shut down all six Storm opportunities with the man advantage, in the first 20 minutes of play.

Defenseman Steve Lingren opened the scoring at 6:43 of the first period, off a blast from just inside the blueline, beating Storm Netminder Chad Collins for his third goal of the season. Mike Henderson connected for his second as a Salmon King at 16:10, and Victoria was looking dangerous.

But penalty troubles continued throughout the game for the Salmon Kings who went to the first intermission two men down, for the second time. The Salmon Kings stood tall in front of Goaltender Rob Muntain the first time, but just 24 ticks into the middle period the Storm drew within one. Ken Magowan scored his seventh goal of the season, assisted by Scooter Smith and Todd Jackson.

Toledo tied the game at two, when Braken Kearns recorded his second goal of the season at 5:11. The Salmon Kings regained the lead at 13:41, when Lingren wristed the puck through a crowd for his second of the night. All three Salmon Kings goals were scored with the man advantage, and they converted half of their six chances.

The Storm powerplay was not finished though as they scored two of their three goals in the final period, five on four. The Salmon Kings found themselves two men down three times in the game, and the Storm were only able exchange three of their 13 opportunities for goals.

Toledo's game tying goal was scored by Jeff Attard at 4:25. Less than three minutes later, Kearns recorded his second and the game winner, and the Storm took their first lead of the night. PJ Martin closed out the score sheet, with his second of the season, from Smith and Jason Maleyko to make the final 5-3.

The Salmon Kings were out-shot in the game 36-22, but showed they have an extremely dangerous counterattack. With all the experience on the blue line, the Salmon Kings move the puck out of their zone quickly, resulting in quality scoring chances.

The Salmon Kings finish their 12 day road trip tomorrow, 5 hours down the Interstate, against the Wheeling Nailers at 11:00am PST. Victoria will return home on Monday evening. They will have two practice days before taking to the ice in their home opener on Thursday November 10th against the Stockton Thunder.
