November 6, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, CA - Condors captain Sean Venedam overtime game-winner completed a hat trick and rookie goaltender Ryan Munce picked up his first professional victory as the Bakersfield Condors defeated the Las Vegas Wranglers 4-3 in front of 6,083 fans at Rabobank Arena. The Condors clicked immediately on the power play, as Andrew Ianiero followed up on a Mike Hofstrand shot and tapped it past Vegas netminder Mike McKenna to take an early 1-0 lead. Scott Balan was credited with an assist as Ianiero recorded his second goal of the season.
Las Vegas answered back later in the period while on the power play. A flurry of activity in front of Bakersfield goaltender Ryan Munce came to a resolution as Dan Tudin lifted the puck just under the crossbar to tie the game at 1-1 with 3 minutes remaining in the 1st period. Christian Chartier and Tim Hambly assisted for the Wranglers on Tudin's first goal of the season.
After the Wranglers took a 2-1 lead midway through the 2nd period on a Chris Stanley goal from Scott Schoenick, the Condors fought back on yet another power play. Scott Basiuk threw the puck into the slot from the blue line, and found Kevin St. Jacques, who tapped it to captain Sean Venedam at far side of the crease, delivering the Condors' 2nd power play goal of the night.
Midway through the third, Venedam connected on a pass from Basiuk on the power play to give the Condors a 3-2 lead. Venedam's slapshot sailed through McKenna's crease and into the back of the net, and would foreshadow a later Bakersfield attack.
However, the Wranglers would come back with under 2 minutes remaining in regulation. Shawn Limpright was stopped twice in the crease by Munce, who held the paddle of his goal stick down along the goal line to stop two shots. Limpright would finally tap in his third attempt to tie the game at 3-3 with 1:39 remaining in regulation and send it to bonus hockey for the 6,083 in attendance.
In the overtime frame, Venedam and the Condors made the best of a Darren Lynch hooking penalty and continually pressured the Wranglers on the 4 on 3. With 1:05 left before a shootout, Basiuk again connected with Venedam, who sent a slapshot sailing through McKenna's legs to seal the Condors' second overtime victory of the season. St. Jacques picked up his second assist of the night, and Basiuk his third.
Ryan Munce picked up the win in his first professional start, making 31 saves on 34 Wrangler shots. Mike McKenna, also making his first start as a pro for Las Vegas, was credited with the loss, despite stopping 27 of Bakersfield's 31 shots on net.
Venedam earned the first star of the game for his performance. Munce was awarded second star, and Mike Hofstrand was named third star.
The Condors head north on Highway 99 tomorrow afternoon to take on the Fresno Falcons at 5:00pm. Venedam and his team return to the Rabobank Arena on November 17th for Student ID Night, when all high school and college students presenting a school ID can purchase seats for just $1.
