Charlotte Checkers News Release
Charlotte, N.C. - The Checkers wanted to bounce back after a shootout loss Wednesday by defeating the struggling Mississippi Sea Wolves on Saturday night.
In the first period, while the Checkers were shorthanded, blueliner, Kirk DeWaele sent a great pass through center ice and on the stick of forward, Mark Lee who buried his breakaway opportunity at 11:29 putting Charlotte up, 1-0. Moments later, on the very same power-play, Mississippi would make up for Lee's goal when a rebound off the pad of Checkers netminder, Matt Zaba landed right on the tape of Sea Wolves forward, Chase Trull who slammed it home at 12:41 tying the contest, 1-1. Later, Checkers right wing, Shawn Vinz netted his first goal of the season when his shot from the slot flew behind Sea Wolves goaltender, Len DiCostanzo at 17:23 putting the Checkers up, 2-1. Less than one minute later, Mississippi would answer back in the form of a goal from Radek Smolenak at 18:06 ending the period with the teams locked at 2-2.
In the second period, The Sea Wolves would take their first lead of the contest. While Kaleb Betts sat in the penalty box for high-sticking, a failed clearing attempt from inside the Checkers zone led directly to a point blank shot by Smolenak who fired the puck behind a sprawling Zaba at 9:26 giving Mississippi a 3-2 advantage. The Checkers would strike back when Trevor Frischmon was fed nicely by Ryan Murphy, skated in front of the net and roofed the puck under the crossbar, locking the game at 3-3.
In the final stanza, Charlotte would recapture the lead on the power play when Nathan Gillies, stationed on the right wing, fired a wrist shot over the catching glove of DiCostanzo giving the Checkers a one goal lead for the third time. But, just like the two previous times, the Checkers would surrender their one goal advantage. This time, on the power play, Sea Wolves forward, Jason Tejchma sped down the right wing and sniped a shot off the glove of Zaba and in the net at 9:23 tying the contest at 4-4. Less than three minutes later, the Checkers had a two-man advantage and it didn't take long for Lee to score his second of the game after blasting a one timer in the net at 13:18. Checkers forward, Dusty Jamieson would follow suit on another five-on-three advantage at 14:04. The Sea Wolves would net one more goal after defenseman, Gio Flamminio beat Zaba five hole at 15:16 bringing his team to within a single goal, but it wasn't enough as time expired and the Checkers won by a score of 6-5.
