Boise, ID - Mike Sullivan and Taggart Desmet each scored twice and goaltender Kellen Briggs got his first professional win, as the Steelheads scored five power play goals in a 7-1 rout of the Alaska Aces in front of 4,621 fans at Qwest Arena on Saturday night.
Four players recorded multiple points for the Steelheads (3-2-5), who snapped a four-game winless streak with the win, helping them earn four points in the three-game series with the Aces (6-3-1).
At 4:37 of the opening period, Sullivan grabbed his first of the evening off a great centering feed by Desmet. After Steelheads' defenseman Jeremy Scherlinck chipped the puck deep in the offensive zone, Brent Shepheard gathered the puck and fed Desmet below the goal line and he found Sullivan open in the slot for his second marker of his career.
Midway through the first period, Aces' defenseman Ryan Glenn ripped a shot from the high slot that beat Briggs (38 saves) over his left pad for his first goal of the season, a power play marker. Kimbi Daniels and Josh Soares were credited with the assists on the visitors' lone tally.
Through one period the game was tied at one with the shots in favor of the Aces 8-7.
Just 3:58 into the second period, Sullivan snagged a loose puck in the Aces' slot and his backhander beat a sprawled out Derek Gustafson (24 saves). Greg Rallo and Darrell Hay picked up the assists on the power play goal.
The Steelheads power play struck again at 12:28 of the stanza when Rallo got to a favorable bounce and netted his third of the year. On the play, Lance Galbraith rushed into the zone and fired a shot wide of Gustafson's cage, which bounced free for Rallo who slammed it home. Hay got his second assist of the night and third of the series on the play.
After two periods, the Steelheads led 3-1 and the shots were even at 22.
In the third period, the Steelheads continued to pour it on. After having lost leads in five of their previous seven third stanzas, the Steelheads scored four times on Saturday night to cap off their largest margin of victory this seson. Galbraith registered a man advantage marker at 8:07, and then Desmet scored twice in just over two minutes to make it 6-1. With one minute left in the match, Mark Bomersback earned his third goal of the series and eighth of the season on the power play from Richard Clune and Kory Scoran.
