Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC - Radek Smolenak scored two goals for the Mississippi Sea Wolves and Jason Tejchma scored a power-play goal and added an assist in his Sea Wolves debut, but the Charlotte Checkers scored three power-play goals in the third period to defeat the Sea Wolves 6-5 at the Charlotte Bobcats Arena on Saturday evening.
Charlotte's Mark Lee broke in alone on net while the Sea Wolves were on the power play and beat Sea Wolves goaltender Len DiCostanzo to the stick side for a shorthand goal at 11:29 of the first period. On the same power play, Chase Trull banged home the rebound of a shot from Pat Oliveto to even the score at one apiece.
XX Vinz gave the Checkers a 2-1 lead at 17:23 of the first period when he took a feed from behind the goal line from Trevor Frishmon and roofed it past DiCostanzo. Radek Smolenak evened the score at two with his first of the game at 18:05.
Smolenak gave the Sea Wolves a 3-2 lead when he scored his second of the night on the power play at 9:26 of the second period. Trevor Frischmon drew Charlotte even at three with a wrist shot that beat DiCostanzo at 15:43.
Nathan Gillies gave Charlotte a 4-3 lead at 3:23 of the third period. Jason Tejchma evened the score for the Sea Wolves with his first goal in a Mississippi sweater on the power play at 9:23 of the third. Mississippi got into penalty trouble as the third period went on, and the Checkers' power-play capitalized on their opportunities, with Mark Lee scoring on a one-timer from Lee Falardeau at 13:18, and Dusty Jamieson scoring with a wrist shot from the right wing at 14:04. Gio Flamminio drew the Sea Wolves within one when he buried a goal-line feed from Mark Hurtubise at 15:46, but Charlotte would hold on for the win.
The Sea Wolves were 3-for-7 on the power play, and Len DiCostanzo made 31 saves on 37 shots.
