
Checkers Ford Named ECHL All-Star MVP

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Checkers forward Matthew Ford was the only player from Charlotte selected to the 2009 ECHL All-Star game in Reading, PA., but he made a strong statement on behalf of the team scoring three goals and one assist for four points during the showcase event and was named the game's Most Valuable Player.
Ford, 6-foot-1, 207 pounds, was an 8th round selection of the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2004 National Hockey League Entry Draft. He has played a total of 21 games for the Checkers this season and leads the team in goals scored with 16 while acquiring 15 assists for 31 points which is second overall on the squad. Ford is currently called-up to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League. This season with the Pack he's suited up in 13 games scoring one goal and one assist.
Ford went on to finish with a +5 rating and 10 shots on goal during the American Conference's thumping of the National Conference by a score of 11-5.
The Checkers are playing their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game takes place on Saturday, Jan. 24th against the South Carolina Stingrays at 7 P.M. start. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date.
