Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
DES MOINES, IA - Paulo Orlando broke out of a slump with a key Grand Slam, and the Storm Chasers prevailed in 10 innings to defeat the Iowa Cubs 8-7 on Wednesday afternoon at Principal Park.
For the 2nd consecutive day, Adalberto Mondesi helped Omaha to an immediate lead. He began the top of the 1st with a triple, and scored on a groundout by Ramon Torres.
The Chasers enjoyed a big 3rd inning to establish a commanding 7-0 lead. Mondesi started it again with a leadoff single, and after he stole 2nd, Torres walked. Mondesi and Torres then completed a double-steal of 3rd and 2nd, and Hunter Dozier walked to load the bases. Ryan O'Hearn earned an RBI with a walk, and Paulo Orlando crunched a Grand Slam to left-center field. (Orlando, who had been mired in an 0-for-22 slump entering the game, also doubled for a 2-hit day.) Bubba Starling followed with a double; he advanced to 3rd on a groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Parker Morin .
Iowa cut that lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the 3rd. Wynton Bernard doubled, David Bote singled him in, and Efren Navarro clubbed a 2-run homer against Kyle Lohse.
The Cubs cut into the lead further in the bottom of the 4th. Ryan Court singled, went to 2nd on a wild pitch, advanced to 3rd on a single by Jacob Hanneman, and scored on a double play. Mike Freeman walked, stole 2nd, and scored on a single by David Bote, reducing Omaha's advantage to 7-5.
Lohse pitched 4 innings in his Omaha debut; he was charged with 5 runs, 7 hits, and 3 walks, with 1 strikeout.
Cubs started Jen-Ho Tseng (L, 0-5) pitched 5+ innings, allowing 7 runs on 7 hits. He struck out 5 and walked 5.
Kevin Lenik (W, 1-1) worked 1.2 innings of scoreless relief; he departed with 2 out in the bottom of the 6th, and Wily Peralta stranded 3 runners before working a flawless 7th. Richard Lovelady worked the bottom of the 8th, but Mike Broadway faltered in the bottom of the 9th.
Broadway walked Efren Navarro, and Mark Zagunis blasted a 2-run homer to center field, tying the game at 7.
In the 10th, the Chasers re-took the lead; Ryan O'Hearn began at 2nd base, and Paulo Orlando hit a ground ball that went through the legs of Cubs third baseman David Bote for an error, allowing O'Hearn to score.
Josh Staumont (S, 1) pitched the bottom of the 10th, and inherited the automatic runner at 2nd. Staumont struck out a batter, induced a groundout, walked a batter, and allowed the runner to steal 2nd. He intentionally walked Mike Freeman to load the bases, and then struck out David Bote on a 2-2 pitch to seal Omaha's 2nd consecutive victory.
The Storm Chasers (10-16) will conclude their series in Des Moines tomorrow afternoon at 12:08 Central time. RHP Trevor Oaks (1-2, 3.09) will take the ball for Omaha, while LHP Michael Roth (0-2, 2.79) will start for Iowa.
