Round Rock Express News Release
METAIRIE, Louisiana - Round Rock Express (10-17) DH Tommy Joseph drove in a pair of runs, including a solo home run, to guide the E-Train to a 4-2 victory over the New Orleans Baby Cakes (11-15) on Wednesday afternoon at the Shrine on Airline.
Express RHP Austin Bibens-Dirkx (1-3, 4.10) earned the first victory of the season for a Round Rock starting pitcher, holding the Baby Cakes to an unearned run on seven hits while striking out eight in 5.0 innings of work. New Orleans LHP Adam Conley (1-4, 6.84) suffered the loss after giving up three runs, only two of which were earned, on six hits and a walk in 8.0 strong innings.
Joseph opened the scoring in the top of the second by blasting a solo home run to deep left-center field, giving Round Rock a quick 1-0 lead. However, New Orleans responded in the bottom of the frame as 3B Eric Campbell notched a two-out single then moved to second on a Jose Cardona fielding error. 'Cakes LF Austin Dean then leveled the game at a run apiece with an RBI single.
An inning later, Cardona and RF Scott Heineman collected back-to-back two-out singles before Joseph followed up with an RBI base hit of his own. Dean misplayed the ball in left field, allowing Heineman to race home, padding the E-Train lead to 3-1.
New Orleans inched closer in the sixth. With RHP Connor Sadzeck on in relief, 2B Cristhian Adames opened the frame with a double. An ensuing fielding error by 1B Hanser Alberto allowed Adames to sprint home, narrowing the gap to 3-2.
Round Rock added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. After singles by 3B Andy Ibanez and C Tony Sanchez, Alberto followed up with an RBI single that left just enough time for Ibanez to race home. Express RHP R.J. Alvarez then worked around a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the 4-2 victory.
Round Rock and New Orleans conclude their four-game series on Thursday night. Express RHP Yohander Mendez (0-3, 6.66) is scheduled to face Baby Cakes RHP Zac Gallen (3-1, 3.10). First pitch at the Shrine on Airline is set for 7:00 p.m.
