Charleston Offense Silenced Again in 3-1 Loss

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston RiverDogs were held to just one run for the second game in a row and lost to the Greenville Drive 3-1 Saturday night on "Shoes for Joe" night, in front of a crowd of 5,741 fans at Joseph P. Riley.
The RiverDogs' only run came in the eighth inning. Renzo Martini led off the frame with a single and scored three batters later on an RBI groundout by Jorge Mateo. Charleston (19-16) trailed 2-1 at the time and left the tying run on third base. Dustin Fowler flew out to center to end the inning.
Greenville (20-15) added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Ben Moore led off the inning with a double to right and then came home on an RBI single by Rafael Devers, the next batter.
The Drive scored their first two runs in the fourth inning. Devers hit an RBI double with two outs and then came home to score. Jorge Mateo committed a throwing error after fielding a ground ball hit by Carlos Mesa that allowed the second Greenville run.
Luis Cedeno (3-2) took the loss despite only giving up one earned run in 5 1/3 innings pitched. Denny Bautista (1-0) earned the win in his first appearance with Greenville. Carlos Pinales pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his first save of the season.
The loss extends Charleston's losing streak to a season-high five games. Greenville now has sole possession of first place in the SAL Southern Division and the RiverDogs trail them by one game.
"Shoes for Joe" Night was a huge success for the RiverDogs, INNERSOLE, and Soles4Souls as over 100 pairs of shoes were donated by gracious fans entering the gates of The Joe.
The new shoes donated by the fans will be given to INNERSOLE, the non-profit organization founded by Dawn Staley, Head Women's Basketball Coach at the University of South Carolina.
INNERSOLE is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide new sneakers to children who are homeless and children who are in need. This is a national and international initiative that will make a difference in the lives of our children by starting the school year off with a new pair of sneakers.
The gently-used shoes donated by the fans will be given to Soles4Souls. Based in Nashville, Tennessee Soles4Souls is a global not-for-profit institution dedicated to fighting the devastating impact and perpetuation of poverty. The organization advances its anti-poverty mission by collecting new and used shoes and clothes from individuals, schools, faith-based institutions, civic organizations and corporate partners, then distributing those shoes and clothes both via direct donations to people in need and by provisioning qualified micro-enterprise programs designed to create jobs in poor and disadvantaged communities.
BALLPARK FUN: The Run, Forrest, Run 5K went of as sweetly as a box of chocolates tastes. Eric Ashton and Virginia Wininger were the fastest runners in the male and female divisions, respectively. Proceeds of the race will benefit the MUSC Storm Eye Institute. Additionally, the two teams took part in a ceremony for Shoeless Joe Jackson, in which they took the field and posed for a group picture with no shoes on. COMING UP: The RiverDogs conclude their four-game home series against Greenville with a 5:05 p.m. start Sunday. Charleston will send RHP Joey Maher (1-2, 5.13 ERA) to the mound against RHP Michael Kopech (1-2, 3.86 ERA) for the Drive. There will be pregame and in-game festivities for Boeing Employee Appreciation Day tomorrow. Every Sunday at The Joe is also a Kids Club Sunday. Parking is free, and kids 12-under eat free. They will receive a coupon for a hot dog, fountain drink and chips. Kids can also enjoy the Reading with the RiverDogs program, where they will have an opportunity to listen to a story read by one of the RiverDogs players. Sunday is another Dog Day. Bring your four-legged friends with you to the ballpark to enjoy the game. Stick around after the game to receive free autographs from the RiverDogs on the field.
