Hickory Crawdads News Release
Augusta, GA - The Hickory Crawdads received a knockout one-two punch from their two Martins Saturday night, as starting pitcher Brett Martin struck out six over seven scoreless innings while Tripp Martin paced the offense with his team-leading 7th home run of the year to lift the 'Dads to a 5-0 win over the Augusta GreenJackets at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
The shutout victory was the 7th of the year for the Crawdads and their second in the first three games of the series, lowering the club's South Atlantic League-best ERA to 2.74. The 7 IP and 6 Ks were both career highs for Brett Martin, who lowered his own ERA to 2.01 while extending his scoreless innings streak to 10 consecutive frames. Tripp Martin's 2-run long ball in the 5th took a 1-0 Hickory lead and ballooned it to 3-0. The 'Dads slugger currently ranks among the SAL leaders in homers (2nd - 7) and slugging percentage (5th - .537).
The Crawdads quickly took advantage of some sloppy GreenJackets defense to take an early lead, as Jose Cardona singled to start the game, took second base on a balk, and eventually scored on a throwing error by 'Jackets shortstop Jeremy Sy for a 1-0 'Dads advantage.
The score remained the same until the 5th, when Martin's 2-run blast to left field pushed the lead to 3-0. Michael De Leon followed with a long ball of his own to lead off the 6th, a solo shot just inside the left field foul pole to make the score 4-0. The Crawdads capped the scoring with another run that inning, with the team taking advantage of two more Augusta errors and an RBI groundout from Travis Demeritte for the final 5-0 advantage.
That was more than enough for the Hickory pitching staff, as Yohander Mendez followed Martin's seven scoreless frames with two shutout innings of his own to finish off the 'Dads 5-0 win.
Martin (3-0) earned the win for his dominating performance, while GreenJackets starter Nick Gonzalez (1-2) took the loss after allowing five runs, three earned, on four hits, one walk, and three strikeouts over five innings pitched.
Offensively, Martin finished the night 1-4 with a home run and 2 RBI, while De Leon went 1-4 with his solo homer. Cardona came through with the club's lone multi-hit night, going 2-4 with a run scored.
The Crawdads (25-9) will look to finish off the 4-game sweep of the GreenJackets (17-17) in the series finale Sunday afternoon at 2:05 pm.
