KANNAPOLIS, NC - The BlueClaws scored twice in the ninth, taking the lead on an RBI single by Herlis Rodriguez, and they topped Kannapolis 9-7 on Saturday night at CMC Northeast Stadium.
The BlueClaws led the game 7-4 before Michael Suiter tied the score with a three-run home run off Scott Harris on the bottom of the 8th. But Lakewood, off David Trexler, took the lead on Rodriguez's RBI single, his third hit of the game. Damek Tomscha, who had four hits and three doubles, doubled in Rodriguez to put the BlueClaws up 9-7.
Rivero, who got the last out of the 8th, got the three outs in the 9th to earn his second win of the season (2-0).
Tomscha went 4-5 with three doubles for the BlueClaws, the first four-hit game of his career. Cord Sandberg, Carlos Tocci, and Herlis Rodriguez all had three hits for Lakewood (17-17). The BlueClaws have now won three of their last four games.
The BlueClaws broke open a 2-2 game with three runs in the 5th inning. After singles by Malquin Canelo and Cord Sandberg, Carlos Tocci's RBI double - on an 0-2 pitch - put the BlueClaws up 3-2 and then an error on shortstop Eddie Alvarez on a groundball hit by Rhys Hoskins allowed two more runs to score and put the BlueClaws up 5-2.
Kannapolis (15-18) got two in the bottom of the 5th against starter Chris Oliver, who came out allowing four runs in five innings.
Lakewood extended their lead with a run in the 6th inning when Damek Tomscha doubled and scored on a wild pitch. They added another in the 8th on an RBI single by Tocci to put the BlueClaws up 7-4.
BlueClaws starter Chris Oliver allowed four runs, three earned, over five innings and got a no-decision. Joey DeNato threw a scoreless inning of relief for the BlueClaws to lower his ERA to 1.53.
The series with Kannapolis finishes on Sunday afternoon at 2:05. LHP Elniery Garcia (2-3) starts for the BlueClaws against LHP Jordan Guerrero (4-0).
