Hagerstown Suns News Release

HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (16-19) erased a two-run deficit in both the eighth and ninth inning on Saturday night, but could not accomplish that feat again in extra innings as the Suns lost in 12 innings to the West Virginia Power (20-15) by a final of 7-6. This was the first extra-inning game the Suns have played this season, and they remain winless when trailing after seven innings in a game this year.

Tied at 5-5 heading into the 12th, SS Cole Tucker began the Power's winning rally with a ground ball single up the middle. Two batters later, Kawika Emsley-Pai doubled home Tucker to give West Virginia the 6-5 lead. Catcher Taylor Gushue followed with a double of his own, making it 7-5.

In the bottom of the 12th the Suns looked like they had another comeback in them when CF Alec Keller and RF Dale Carey reached on back-to-back singles to begin the inning. Following a force out which eliminated Carey from the base path and put runners on first and third with one out, Brennan Middleton made it a one-run game with a line drive single into left. However, DH Grant DeBruin then grounded into a double play to end the ballgame.

The Suns entered the eighth inning trailing 3-1 and having not collected a hit since the second, but with one swing of the bat Carey changed the tone of the game. He drilled a ball over the center field wall for his second homerun of the season, and that knotted the score at 3-3.

In the top of the ninth the Power re-took a two-run advantage. With runners on second and third and one out, Suns catcher Raudy Read allowed a pitch to get past him, letting CF Elvis Escobar score from third to make it 4-3. Tito Pollo then sent a double to left, driving in 1B Chase Simpson to make it 5-3.

The ninth inning comeback for Hagerstown included two hits and two errors. The Power wound up committing five errors in the game, though they out-hit the Suns 13-12. Hagerstown led initially in the game 1-0, but West Virginia scored a run each in the fourth, sixth, and seventh to set up their first two-run lead.

LHP David Napoli (2-1) got tagged with the loss for Hagerstown. He gave up two earned runs on four hits and one walk while striking out three over 2.2 innings. RHP Sam Street (2-0) earned the win for West Virginia. He gave up one earned run on five hits while striking out one over three innings.

These teams will conclude their five-game series at Municipal Stadium on Sunday May 17. The Suns will send RHP Luis Reyes (0-2) to the mound for his seventh start of the season. He will square off against RHP Austin Coley (5-1) for West Virginia. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05pm.
