May 10, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
Brian Cavazos-Galvez belted two home runs on Sunday afternoon to lead the Lancaster Barnstormers to a 4-3 Mother's Day victory over the Long Island Ducks.
The win broke up a six-game skid for the Barnstormers.
Cavazos-Galvez reached Mickey Jannis (1-2) for a solo shot toward the left field line one out into the top of the fourth to break a scoreless tie. Two innings later, after Blake Gailen had reached on a throwing error by shortstop Dan Lyons, the Barnstormers right fielder connected again, this time taking a Jannis delivery over the wall in left center for a 3-0 lead.
After Bryan Sabatella scored on a double play grounder in the sixth, the Barnstormers struck again in the seventh, chasing Jannis singles by Lance Zawadzki, Kevin Rivers and Yusuke Kajimoto for a 4-1 lead.
The remainder of the afternoon was spent keeping the Ducks from tying the game. Long Island scored two in the bottom of the seventh. Reegie Corona stretched a hitting streak to 10 games with a double to right. He took third on a wild pitch and scored when Dan Lyons grounded to short after a lengthy battle against reliver Scott Gracey. Sabatella knocked Gracey out with a two-out triple to right center, and Prentice Redman greeted Pete Andrelczyk with a single down the left field line. Lew Ford also singled, but Andrelczyk was able to induce a force play grounder out of Cody Puckett to end the inning.
Jon Griffin doubled into the right field corner on Zach Jackson's first pitch in the eighth, but the lefty roared back to get a one hop grounder to third and two strikeouts to hold the lead. Cody Eppley, taking on the closer role, yielded a leadoff hit to Lyons in the ninth before striking out Sabatella and Redman. Ford grounded to third to end the game.
The story may have been completely different had it not been for the defensive play of the day in the third inning. Long Island loaded the bases against Dan Osterbrock (1-1) with one out on two walks and a bloop single. Ford hit a ground ball up the middle, but Zawadzki made a diving stop and backhanded flip to Kajimoto out of the glove. The second baseman was able to get Ford to complete the inning ending double play.
Lancaster is off on Monday before traveling to Somerset on Tuesday. Shunsuke Watanabe (0-1) is ticketed to get the start for the Barnstormers on Tuesday evening against lefty Sean Bierman. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
