York Revolution News Release
A new club record was established for the York Revolution on Mother's Day evening and it had nothing to do with pitching or batting statistics. A record four members of the Revs were ejected for arguing various calls throughout the course of the contest, which got away late and turned into a lopsided 14-5 defeat to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at Santander Stadium. The Revs will look to snap their three-game skid and salvage the finale on Monday evening against the first place Blue Crabs, who they now trail by three games in the standings.
The game got off to a promising start as the Revs batted around in the second inning, scoring three times for a 3-0 lead. Luis De La Cruz jumpstarted the inning with a double down the left field line and Brandon Jones followed with a single to right, setting the stage for a sac fly to deep center from Andres Perez to plate the first run. Johan Limonta then singled to right and Willie Cabrera was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mikey Reynolds then picked up an RBI on an infield single, and Wilson Valdez did the same with a groundout.
Revs starter Mike McClendon was sharp early, retiring his first six batters of the game, but Southern Maryland got to the right-hander for four runs in the third, quickly erasing York's lead as the Blue Crabs also batted around. Casey Stevenson led off with a double down the right field line, and Jamar Walton backed it up with an RBI triple into the right field corner. Casey Frawley lined an RBI single to left as the bottom three batters in the order produced a quick two runs. Zach Wilson later tied the game with an RBI double down the right field line, and Craig Maddox gave the Crabs the lead with an RBI double to left-center. Southern Maryland tallied five hits in the inning, four of which went for extra bases.
The game took a nasty turn for the home team in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs, Fred Lewis blooped an RBI single to left to extend Southern Maryland's lead and Stevenson doubled to right, plating two more and ending the afternoon for McClendon. During the pitching change, fellow starting pitcher Corey Thurman was ejected from the Revs dugout, and shortly thereafter, acting manager and Revs pitching coach Paul Fletcher was quickly ejected by home plate umpire Buzz Albert on his way back from the mound. Revs third base coach Enohel Polanco would finish the game as acting manager.
York manager Mark Mason had been ejected during the previous inning by first base umpire Matt Beaver for arguing a safe call on an attempted double play. It was one of several trips to the field made by Mason to contest rulings during the course of the series.
Walton greeted reliever Stephen Penney with an RBI single to center, as the Blue Crabs posted their second four-run outburst of the game, taking a commanding 8-3 lead.
The Revs inched closer, as De La Cruz launched a home run to left-center in the bottom of the fifth. Then in the sixth, Limonta led off with a double to right-center and Cabrera singled to right, setting the table for Reynolds who drove in a run on a fielder's choice, trimming the deficit to 8-5.
The game got away in the final two innings, however. Leyson Septimo whiffed the first two batters he faced in the eighth, but following a walk to Frawley, was facing Antone DeJesus when De La Cruz was ejected by Albert for arguing a ball call. DeJesus then singled to left, and Renny Osuna connected on a three-run homer to left field to make it 11-5.
The Blue Crabs scored three more in the ninth on a two-run triple to right-center by Stevenson and an RBI bloop single to left-center from Frawley.
Southern Maryland totaled 15 hits including eight extra-base hits. The 14 runs are the most by a Revs opponent on the young season. The fifth through ninth hitters combined to go 10-for-23 with 10 RBI and nine runs. Stevenson enjoyed the biggest day, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, four RBI, and three runs.
The Revs racked up 12 hits in defeat. Jones went 3-for-4, notching his second three-hit game in the last three contests.
Crabs starter Brian Grening (1-0) earned the win despite allowing four runs on eight hits in five innings.
McClendon (0-2) suffered the loss, saddled with eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits in 4.2 innings. He walked one and struck out six. McClendon had allowed two earned runs or fewer in six of his previous seven starts with York dating to last season.
York lefty Rommie Lewis (2-0, 0.90) faces Southern Maryland right-hander Shaun Garceau (0-1, 2.70) on Monday night at 6:30 p.m. It is Gluttony Day at the ballpark featuring the "7th Inning Stretch Marks Challenge" Eating Contest. Tickets are on-sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
