Bluefish Lose Finale In Walk-Off

(Bridgeport, Conn. - May 10, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (8-7) fell to the Somerset Patriots (9-6) 2-1 to take the three game series at TD Bank Ballpark on Sunday afternoon. Starting pitcher D.J. Mitchell picked up a no-decision, pitching four scoreless innings, surrendering four hits and striking out one. Mitchell dropped his ERA to a miniscule 1.31 on the season.

The 'Fish took the lead in the top half of the ninth inning of a scoreless game. With one out, infielder Luis Rodriguez singled to centerfield. Ildemaro Vargas then reached at first on a fielder's choice, forcing Rodriguez out at second. With two outs, Nick Van Stratten reached on a two-base error by rightfielder James Skelton, and Vargas scored all the way from first base with the game's first run, all coming off of Patriots relief pitcher Kyler Newby.

In the bottom half of the ninth inning and Bridgeport closer Tim Gustafson on the mound (0-1) David Vidal drew a leadoff walk. The next batter was Greg Hopkins, who belted an RBI double, scoring Vidal with the tying run. Robert Andino then sent the Patrtiots fans home happy with the game-winning RBI single to left, plating Hopkins, and Somerset had their second walk-off one-run victory of the series. Van Stratten led the way for Bridgeport with two-hits, extending his hitting streak to eight games and his on-base streak to 12 games.

Bridgeport continues their six game road trip on Tuesday, May 12th when they head to Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip, New York to take on the Long Island Ducks in the opening game of a three-game series.
