Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

BURLINGTON, VT - Bobby Wernes hit a game-tying, two-run double in the seventh inning, then drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth, as the Tri-City ValleyCats defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters 7-5 at Centennial Field, in Burlington, Vt., on Saturday night.

With the victory, Ed Romero, Tri-City's manager, earned his 128th win at the helm of the 'Cats, which broke Gregg Langbehn's record for the most managerial victories in team history. Langbehn won 127 games as the 'Cats skipper from 2004-2006.

After dropping the past two contests by one run, the ValleyCats fell behind the host Lake Monsters 5-0, after Vermont scored one run in the bottom of the first, and four in the bottom of the second.

However, the ValleyCats got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh frame, when Dexture McCall scored on a wild pitch, and Johnny Sewald drove home Cesar Carrasco with an RBI double. Alexander Melendez then hit an infield single off of the foot of the Lake Monsters pitcher, leading to Wernes' game-tying double, which plated both Melendez and Sewald.

The score remained tied at 5-5 leading into the top of the ninth inning, when Richard Gonzalez walked on a 3-2 pitch. He was then replaced at first by pinch-runner Antonio Nunez, who went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sewald, then moved to third on a ground out by Melendez.

That brought up Wernes, who gave Tri-City their first lead of the night by grounding a 3-1 offering from Lake Monsters reliever Tyler Painton into right field to score Nunez.

One pitch later, Kolbey Carpenter brought home Wernes by smashing a double off of the left field wall, to put the 'Cats ahead 7-5.

Right-hander Chris Murphy then retired Vermont in order in the bottom of the ninth to cement Tri-City's come-from-behind win, and secure Romero's record breaking victory.

Following the win, the 'Cats will now return home to Joseph L. Bruno Stadium to begin a three-game home set against the Brooklyn Cyclones, on Sunday. On the mound for Tri-City in the series opener, which will begin at 5 p.m., will be LHP Zac Person (1-4, 7.65), with LHP Kevin Canelon (5-4, 3.31) getting the start for Brooklyn.
