
Lowell Wins in the Tenth

NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (31-32) dropped a heart breaker on Saturday night as they fell 4-3 to the Lowell Spinners (34-33) in 10 innings. The Tigers did take the season series against Lowell 7-5 as they took two of the three games in the series.
Lowell took the lead in the top of the tenth against Oswaldo Castillo (1-2). Shortstop Jeremy Rivera started the inning with a walk, and it was runners on first and second with one out after an intentional walk to designated hitter Chad De La Guerra. The two were still there with two-outs but it was centerfielder Tate Matheny delivering the go ahead base hit making it 2-1. Third basemen Mitch Gunsolus and catcher Jhon Nunez followed with RBI singles pushing the lead to 4-1.
Connecticut attempted to come back in the bottom half of the tenth against Lowell closer Bobby Poyner (SV 9). Shortstop Keaton Jones started the inning with a double and after leftfielder Jacob Kapstein walked the Tigers had the first two on. With one-out third basemen Jose Zamrabo doubled home Jones and the Tigers trailed just 4-2.
First basemen Will Allen was up next and he reached on an error that scored Kapstein making it 4-3. That brought up designated hitter Corey Baptist the hero of Thursday night and he grounded into a game ending double play.
Lowell scored first off Tigers starter Ryan Castellanos in the fourth as first basemen Josh Ockimey (2-5, RBI) had an RBI single. The Tigers tied the game in the seventh off Spinners relief pitcher Matt Kent (7-1) on an RBI double by catcher Shane Zeile.
Castellanos went five innings for the Tigers allowing just the one run, which was unearned on five hits while striking out three. Josh Heddinger and Matt Davenport both pitched two scoreless innings. However, it was Castillo who gave up the three runs in the tenth on three hits and two walks. He threw 43 pitches in his inning of work.
Jose Almonte started the game for Lowell and pitched extremely well as he lasted six innings surrendering just two hits and two walks as he struck out four. Kent registered the win going three innings and giving up three hits and a single run. Poyner stumbled to the save giving up two hits and two runs in the tenth.
Connecticut will play the first game of a three game series at Staten Island on Sunday. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
