West Virginia now holds a 1.5 game lead in the Wild Card standings over the State College Spikes, Staten Island Yankees and Hudson Valley Renegades, who all have the same record of 34-32.
The Scrappers struck first in the game by scoring a run on an RBI single to take an early 1-0 lead. The Black Bears answered back in the second inning after 1B Albert Baur started things up with a one-out double. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, 2B Mitchell Tolman delivered a deep sacrifice fly to center field to tie the score at 1-1. DH Christian Kelley came through with a two-out single to give West Virginia a 2-1 lead.
Mahoning Valley got a two-out double from C Daniel Salters in the top of the third, bringing in two runs and giving the Scrappers a 3-2 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, the Black Bears offense got hot and never looked back. LF Ty Moore drove in the first run of the inning on an RBI triple and later scored on a fielder's choice hit to shortstop by 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes. CF Casey Hughston delivered a sacrifice fly to put the Black Bears out in front 5-3 before Tolman registered his second RBI of the night on a sharply hit single to center field to give West Virginia a 6-3 lead.
The Black Bears added on an extra insurance run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Moore to put West Virginia out in front 7-3.
RP Nick Hibbing (2-1) picked up the win out of the bullpen for the Black Bears after pitching 2.0 scoreless frames before RP Tate Scioneaux registered his second save this season by tossing the final three innings without allowing a run.
Tolman and Moore each had a great night at the plate, each finishing with three hits and two RBI. DH Ryan Nagle and Kelley were also hot at the plate for the Black Bears by each collecting a pair of hits.
West Virginia will now hit the road to take on the Batavia Muckdogs in a three game series at Dwyer Stadium beginning on Sunday, August 30 with a slated first pitch of 5:05 p.m.
