
Tri-City Rallies From 5-Run Deficit For 7-5 Win At Vermont

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Tri-City ValleyCats rallied from an early 5-0 deficit with five unearned runs in seventh inning to tie the game, then got RBI hits from Bobby Wernes and Kolbey Carpenter in the top of the ninth inning for a 7-5 New York-Penn League victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters Saturday night at historic Centennial Field.
The Lake Monsters jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Seth Brown RBI double, then added four runs in the second for the five-run lead. Brett Siddall led off the second with a triple and scored on a Ryan Howell sacrifice fly, while Richie Martin both had RBI infield singles that scored a runner all the way from second base.
Vermont starter Kyle Friedrichs allowed just two hits over the first three innings, while Bubba Derby one hit and five strikeouts over the middle three innings. Derby has now allowed just three earned runs in 32 2/3 innings overall (0.83 ERA) and just one run in 21 innings at Centennial Field. Jared Lyons took over to start the seventh inning and a leadoff error by Ryan Howell and a two-out dropped foul ball by Tom Gavitt led to five unearned runs for Tri-City.
The ValleyCats first run scored on a wild pitch right after the dropped foul ball and Johnny Sewald added an RBI double to cut the Vermont lead to 5-2. Tyler Painton relieved Lyons and gave up a RBI single to Alexander Melendez and a two-run game-tying double to Wernes. The game stayed 5-5 until the ninth when Painton walked Richard Gonalez to open the inning, then allowed a two-out go aheaad RBI single to Wernes and an RBI double to Carpenter.
Reliever Chris Murphy (2-1) allowed just two hits with one walk and five strikeouts over the final four innings to earn the victory for Tri-City (36-30), while Painton (1-1) three runs on five hits over the final 2 1/3 innings to take the loss for Vermont (28-37). Siddall was 2-for-4 with a run, double and triple for the Lake Monsters, while Seth Brown was 2-for-4 with the RBI double.
Vermont heads out on the road for a three-game series in Aberdeen, Maryland beginning on Sunday at 5:35 pm. The Lake Monsters then return home for their final four games of the season at Centennial Field beginning with a doubleheader on Wednesday starting at 7:05 pm against the Hudson Valley Renegades.
