Renegades Win In Dramatic Fashion Over Staten Island

Wappingers Falls, NY - On a walk-off RBI single from shortstop Michael Russell, the Hudson Valley Renegades defeated the Staten Island Yankees by a score of 6-5 on Saturday evening at Dutchess Stadium. With the result, the Renegades saw their record improve to 34-32 while Staten Island fell to 34-32.

Staten Island scored a run in the top of the first inning as with two outs, center fielder Trey Amburgey singled, stole second base and took third base on a throwing error. He came around to score on a RBI single from third baseman Kevin Cornelius to take a 1-0 lead.

The Renegades tied the score in the bottom of the second inning as catcher Taylor Hawkins led off the inning with a double and scored on a two-out RBI single from second baseman Oscar Sanay. Then left fielder Joe McCarthy brought home both Sanay and designated hitter Nic Wilson, who walked earlier in the second inning, on a two-run double to give Hudson Valley a 3-1 lead.

Staten Island tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the fourth inning as designated hitter Ryan Krill hit a RBI double and scored on a sacrifice bunt from shortstop Kyle Holder. Both starting pitchers, Hudson Valley's Travis Ott and Staten Island's Luis Cedeno, went five innings with Ott striking out six batters in his start.

In the top of the eighth inning, Staten Island scored a pair of runs as Cornelius singled and right fielder Jhalan Jackson walked to lead off the inning. Cornelius scored as Krill reached first base on a wild pitch after striking out and Jackson scored on a RBI single by Holder, giving the Yankees a 5-3 lead.

The Renegades tied the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning as Russell singled and third baseman Alex Schmidt doubled to lead off the inning. Russell scored on a wild pitch and Schmidt scored on a passed ball during first baseman Hector Montes's at-bat.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Sanay singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from McCarthy. Then with one out, Russell hit a line drive single down the third base line to bring home Sanay and gave the Renegades a 6-5 win.

Tyler Brashears (1-1) earned the win in relief for the Renegades as he did not allow a run in one and two-thirds innings pitched. Josh Roeder (1-2) took the loss for Staten Island as he gave up a run in one and a third innings pitched.
