Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA- Not even a strong start for the Tri-City ValleyCats on Thursday night in State College could bring an end to their losing streak. Despite having a lead over the Spikes just two batters into the ballgame, the 'Cats lost their seventh straight game, after a three-run State College fifth was the difference in a 4-1 final.

Tony Kemp started the top of the first about as well as one can, lining a triple to center field. Jack Mayfield then brought home Kemp on a groundout, and the 'Cats were on the board. However, that proved to be the only run the team would score all night, as three State College pitchers shut Tri-City down the rest of the way.

In the bottom of the fifth, still trailing 1-0, State College left fielder Luis Perez singled home a run off of ValleyCats starter Tanner Bushue (3-2) to even the score. Two batters later, with two outs, Brett Wiley, the Spikes second baseman, tripled to right field, scoring two and putting the home team ahead for good. Bushue went five innings, surrendering those three runs.

The 'Cats seem poised to rally back in the next half-inning, however. A hit-by-pitch, a single, and a wild pitch had put runners in scoring position for Tri-City's leading run producer, Michael Martinez. With a chance to tie the game up, Martinez flew out to left to end the frame.

Two innings later, with two one and one out, Brett Booth pinch-hit for Mayfield. Booth singled to right, but Jimmy Bosco, State College's right fielder, gunned down Ryan Dineen at the plate. Conrad Gregor would then strike out, ending the threat.

Out of the bullpen for the 'Cats, Pat Christensen pitched a scoreless sixth. After him, Adrian Houser threw the seventh and eighth, allowing one run.

Kevin Herget (5-0) got the win for the Spikes. The righty threw 5.2 IP, allowing four hits and just one earned run. Micahel Aldrete finished the sixth and hurled the entire seventh, before Jacob Booden recorded a six-out save to shut the door on the struggling 'Cats.

With the loss, the ValleyCats now find themselves in a tie for first place in the Stedler Division with the Lowell Spinners, after the Red Sox affiliate won Thursday night. The 'Cats will now head to Aberdeen for a three-game series with the Ironbirds. The first pitch for Friday night's game is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
