Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA --- Steven Ramos singled home the only run of the game on an 0-2 pitch with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the State College Spikes a 1-0 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Friday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

The bottom of the ninth began with Mason Katz being called out at first on a groundout to third, but the call was reversed when home plate umpire James Pattison ruled that the throw from third baseman Ryon Healy had pulled first baseman Michael Soto off the bag. The Spikes took advantage of the reversal as pinch runner Brett Wiley was sacrificed to second and scored on Ramos' two-out game-ending single.

It was the fourth  1-0 loss of the season for the Lake Monsters and their sixth loss when holding the opponent to two runs or less as Vermont lost its second straight game to fall back to the .500 mark at 23-23. It is the first time that the Lake Monsters have lost consecutive games since being swept in a three-game series at Batavia July 10-12.

Vermont starter Brent Powers scattered six hits with no walks and five strikeouts over seven scoreless innings, lowering his ERA to 1.75 over his nine starts this season for the Lake Monsters. Sam Bragg (0-1) was charged with the unearned run in the ninth to take the loss. Healy had two of Vermont's four hits, the seventh time that the Lake Monsters have been held to four hits in a game.

The shutout was the second of the season for State College (25-19), which lowered its league-leading team ERA to 2.50 overall (Vermont dropped its ERA to 2.90 with no earned runs allowed over 8 2/3 innings). Starter Arturo Reyes gave up two hits with one walk and five strikeouts over five innings, while Victor Harris two hits in three innings and Mitch Harris (2-1) a scoreless ninth for his second win.

Vermont will look to get back over .500 with the second of the three-game series at State College on Saturday beginning at 7:05 pm. The series will conclude on Sunday at 6:05 pm before the Lake Monsters open a six-game homestand at Centenial Field on Tuesday.
