Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY - Kevin Brandt may have delivered one of the best pitching performances of his career on Friday night against the Auburn Doubledays. The Renegades lefthander retired the final 18 hitters he faced, leaving the ballgame after the seventh inning with a 1-0 lead in his pocket. The team with the league's worst record then ensured that they wouldn't lose their fifth game in a row with a surprise attack against the 'Gades bullpen in the eighth inning. Four base hits, including the game-winning three-run home run by Wilman Rodriguez, propelled the Doubledays to a 5-2 victory in the first meeting between the teams in 2013.

Brandt appeared to have control issues in the first two innings as he adjusted to the strike zone. After walking a batter in the first, he then walked Jean Valdez on five pitches to open the second. Jimmy Yezzo rocketed an 0-2 pitch down into the left field corner, slipping the ball underneath the chain link fence for a grounds rule double that put runners at second and third. Needing three outs, Brandt got popouts on the infield before striking out David Masters to put out the growing fire and keep the game scoreless.

For the second straight night, the combination of James Harris and Julian Ridings got the Renegades offense in motion. Harris singled into right field to open the third against Austin Voth, who then threw a wild pitch to push Harris to second. Ridings smoked a hard grounder into center underneath second baseman Matt Foat, and Hudson Valley was in front 1-0. However, they'd only get one more runner into scoring position over the final six innings.

In that fateful eighth, Tyler Gauthier emerged from the Renegades bullpen for his professional debut after being acquired about a week ago. Following Brandt's remarkable run, Gauthier got Foat to fly out to right for the first out. A single by Matt Reistetter came before Gauthier hit Masters with a 1-2 breaking ball to put the tying run in scoring position. Kyle Attl then tied the game with an RBI double and ended Gauthier's first night with the Renegades. Facing lefty Derek Loera, Greg Zebrack hit an RBI single to make it 2-1 Auburn and thus set the stage for the loudest pop of the night. Rodriguez turned on a 1-2 offering and crushed it over the left field wall to tack on three runs and give the Doubledays a 5-1 lead.

Renegades first baseman John Alexander led off the bottom of the eighth with a single against sidearmer L.J. Hollins. Harris' groundout to the right side moved Alexander to second, and on a close play at first with Hollins covering to take the throw, Alexander advanced to third. Ridings lifted a deep fly ball to right to score the run before Ariel Soriano struck out to end the inning. Both sides would go in order in the ninth as Cory Bafidis earned his first professional save for the Doubledays.
