State College Spikes News Release

-SPIKES MEET LAKE MONSTERS TO START SET TONIGHT: The State College Spikes look for their seventh straight home win as they face the Vermont Lake Monsters to open a three-game series tonight at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Tonight's contest also begins the back half of a six-game homestand for the Spikes. State College is 3-0 so far this homestand after sweeping the Tri-City ValleyCats. The Spikes are 13-2 in their last 15 home games. The Spikes currently sit one game out of the league's Wild Card lead, with Tri-City now leading the way. State College is 9-10 all-time against Vermont, with a 6-3 record in home games.

-LAST NIGHT: Brett Wiley knocked in three runs in his first game with the Spikes and Kevin Herget notched his league-leading fifth win of the year as State College finished a three-game sweep of the Tri-City ValleyCats with a 4-1 victory on Thursday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Wiley, who joined the Spikes on Wednesday after being called up from the Cardinals' Rookie-level affiliate in Johnson City, delivered a two-run triple in the fifth inning that gave State College its first lead of the game and made it 3-1. The 2012 13th-round draft choice then followed with an RBI single in the seventh inning to give the Spikes an insurance run. Herget went 5 2/3 innings for the win, yielding one run on four hits and a hit batsman while striking out four.

-REYES TO MAKE START FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Arturo Reyes heads to the hill for his fifth pro appearance and third start as he gets the ball for State College tonight against the Lake Monsters. Reyes went four innings in his first start of the season, but took the loss after allowing two solo home runs to Connecticut. The Cardinals' 2013 40th-round draft choice out of Gonzaga then bounced back with five one-run innings against Auburn this past Saturday in a no-decision.

-LAKE MONSTERS GO WITH POWERS IN OPENER: Left-hander Brent Powers gets the ball for Vermont this evening. Powers is in his third different season with the Lake Monsters, and is the club's all-time career leader in starts, innings pitched, hits allowed and strikeouts. An 18th-round draft choice of the Athletics in 2011 out of Sam Houston State, Powers has won his last two starts, going six shutout innings against Aberdeen on July 23, then yielded just one run on four hits and three walks against Lowell on Sunday.

-HERRERA MAKES HISTORY FOR SPIKES: Juan Herrera became the first player to play for and against the Spikes in the same season on Wednesday, and has played each of the last two nights. Herrera, who was acquired by the Cardinals from the Indians in a trade on Tuesday, had played eight games against the Spikes this year for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. Herrera was joined by another new addition, infielder Brett Wiley, and the two formed Thursday night's double-play combination for the Spikes.
