Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

Norwich, CT- Having been rained out the night before, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers decided that 9 innings wasn't enough on Friday night in Connecticut. The Scrappers were able to push across the winning run in the top of the 13 innings when Juan Romero singled home Nellie Rodriguez. Manuel Carmona then slammed the door shut for the 4-3 win.

The game moved quickly as both teams struggled to get anything going offensively through the first 4 innings. In the top of the 4th the Scrappers grabbed the early lead when Robel Garcia singled home Paul Hendrix with 2 outs. The lead was short lived as the Tigers answered back in the bottom of the 5th. The Tigers combined 2 walks and 2 errors to take the 2-1 lead. They added an insurance run in the 6th inning as well. The Scrappers waited until the top of the 8th inning to respond. Romero doubled to start the inning. A Martin Cervenka single and a Cody Ferrell fielder's choice brought Romero in to cut the deficit to 3-2. Two batters later, Claudio Bautista delivered a double to right field to score Ferrell with the tying run. From there the game remained tied until the 13 when Romero drove in Rodriguez with the winning run.

The Scrappers pitching staff continued their fine performances. Caleb Hamrick started and went 5 innings while allowing 5 hits. He gave up 2 runs, both unearned, and walked 2 while striking out 5. Michael Goodnight followed with 2 innings. He allowed 1 run on 3 hits and struck out 3. Alexis Paredes then went 3 innings of his own. He allowed just 2 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3. Trevor Frank (1-3) followed Paredes. He went 2 hitless innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out 3 to earn his first professional win. Manuel Carmona (3) then pitched a scoreless bottom of the 13th to end the game. He walked 1 and struck out 2 while allowing 1 hit.

The Scrappers and Tigers play again Saturday night at 7:05. Rob Whitenack will get the start for Mahoning Valley. Catch all the action on 1440AM and online at www.mvscrappers.com with Tim Pozsgai.
