Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

TROY, NY - The Tri-City ValleyCats concluded their six-game homestand with a bang, defeating the Mahoning Valley Scrappers by the score of 10-4 at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, on Sunday night.

Tri-City broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the third, when Antonio Nunez drove home Brooks Marlow with a bunt.

The Scrappers threatened to score the following frame, putting runners on second and third with only one out. However, right-handed reliever Zac Grotz got Mahoning Valley right fielder Jodd Carter to fly out to Tri-City's Johnny Sewald in center field, who threw out Nate Winfrey trying to score from third.

The ValleyCats carried that momentum into the bottom of the fourth frame, when Dexture McCall drove home Hector Roa with a double, Richard Gonzalez drove home McCall with a single, and Sewald drove home Cesar Carrasco with a single, capping a three-run inning.

The offensive onslaught did not end there, as Tri-City scored three runs again in the bottom of the fifth, when McCall drove home Pat Porter with another RBI single, and Marlow drove home Roa and McCall with a two-run double.

In the bottom of the seventh, Carrasco slugged a 1-0 pitch from Scrappers reliever Ryan Perez over the left field wall for his second home run of the year, while Aaron Mizell added an RBI in both the sixth and seventh frames, as the 'Cats reached a total of 10 runs for the third time this season.

Sewald (3-for-4 with a stolen base, a run scored, and one RBI) and Roa (3-for-5 with two runs scored) led the way in the hit column, while Marlow (2-for-3 with two doubles), McCall (2-for-5 with two runs scored and a double), and Mizell (2-for-5 with one stolen base) each drove in two runs.

Porter also posted a multi-hit game, going 2-for-5 with one run, while extending his hit streak to 12 games in the process.

Right-hander Chris Murphy, a 24th round draft pick by the Houston Astros this year out of Millersville University, got the start in his ValleyCats debut, pitching 3.1 scoreless frames.

Earning the win for Tri-City was Grotz (2-0), who retired all four batters he faced.

The ValleyCats will now head to Wappingers Falls, N.Y., to begin a three-game road series against the Hudson Valley Renegades. Starting on the mound for the Renegades for the 7:05 p.m. first pitch will be LHP Michael Velasquez (1-2, 3.09), with RHP Scott Weathersby (2-1, 3.72) getting the start for Tri-City.
