Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, NY- The Doubledays put two crooked numbers on the score board en route to an 8-5 win over the Renegades in the rubber match of the three game series. Auburn completed its six-game home stand with a 4-2 record and has now one four series in a row all 2-1.
After a quick first inning, the Doubledays struck first in the second. Ian Sagdal led off with a groundout to second to bring up Randy Encarnacion. The left fielder notched a bloop single into center that fell in between a trio of Renegades. Melvin Rodriguez dug in next and hit a grounder to short that should have been an inning ending double play, but it was bobbled by Jake Cronenworth, allowing Encarnacion to slide safely into second and Rodriguez into first. Jorge Tillero then knocked in Encarnacion with a single, Edwin Lora brought in Rodriguez with a double, and Tillero scored on a Victor Robles sacrifice fly. With three runs in already, Dalton Dulin brought in Lora for the fourth and final run of the inning with a single up the middle.
Hudson Valley didn't wait long to respond. Cronenworth led off the third by working a walk and moved to second on a single from Cade Gotta. Cronenworth advanced to third on Joe McCarthy's fielder's choice and scored on a Matt Dacey's sacrifice fly. Manny Sanchez brought in the final run with a triple into right to score McCarthy. After two and a half, it was 4-2 Auburn.
The very next inning in the fourth, Angel Moreno led off with a double into right and scored on Danny De La Calle's single into center. De La Calle came around to score when Gotta ground into a double play three batters later.
After four the game was tied at four. But in the bottom of the fifth, the Doubledays retook the lead. Dulin led off with a triple and came around to score two batters later when Rhett Wiseman lined a single into center to give Auburn a 5-4 lead.
Neither team scored in the sixth and seventh before the Doubledays put a three on the board in the eighth. Wiseman and Sagdal led off with back-to-back singles and Rodriguez walked two batters after Sagdal to load the bases with one out. After Tillero popped out, Lora brought in Wiseman and Sagdal with a two-run single to right that allowed Rodriguez to advance to third. Robles then knocked in Rodriguez with a bloop single to right. After eighth, it was 8-4 Doubledays.
Tommy Peterson came out of the bullpen in the ninth to shut the door and gave up a leadoff triple to Jake Cronenworth. After Gotta walked, McCarthy knocked in Cronenworth to put the score at 8-5. Hector Montes flew out to center for the first out of the ninth before Manny Sanchez grounded into a 1-6-3 double play to end the game.
The victory gave the Doubledays a 6-6 record against the McNamara division this season. Auburn went 1-2 against Brooklyn and Staten Island and 2-1 against Aberdeen and Hudson Valley. The Doubledays will not face any of those teams again in the regular season.
Auburn now hits the road to visit West Virginia for the first time in New York-Penn League history. The Black Bears have come to Falcon Park twice this season and the Doubledays are 1-5 against them. Taylor Guilbeau, Erick Fedde, and Matt Crownover are the probable starters in order for the Doubledays.
