Huge 5th Inning Propels Yanks to 8-5 Win

The Staten Island Yankees (21-19) defeated the Aberdeen Ironbirds (20-21), 8-5, Sunday evening in Staten Island to claim the series. The teams combined for 24 hits in a high-scoring affair.

Aberdeen scored immediately in the top of the first inning. Ricardo Andujar reached on a bunt single to third base and moved over to second base on a throwing error by Drew Bridges. Two batters later Randolph Gassaway brought Andujar home to score on a single to left field.

The Ironbirds scored four runs in the second inning. Drew Turbin and Jerry McClanahan produced back to back doubles to give Aberdeen a two-run lead. Centerfielder Glynn Davis drove in McClanahan with a two-out single and Andujar hit a two-run home run to right-center field to pad the lead even more. The homer was Andujar's second of the season.

The Yankees bats remained quiet until the bottom of the fifth inning when they exploded for seven runs. The first three batters reached base; Zach Zehner and Jeff Hendrix singled while Kyle Holder drew a walk. Thairo Estrada's sacrifice fly to right field brought home Zehner for the first Yankee run of the game. Hendrix scored when Ironbird first basemen Alexander Lee committing a throwing error. Jhalan Jackson hit an RBI single to right field which cut the deficit to two runs. Bridges then had the decisive hit of the game, when he hit a bases clearing three-run double to put the Yankees up by one. Jake Hernandez capped off the seven-run rally with an RBI single to right field.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Yankees added another run. Hernandez hit a two-out single, advanced to third on a Zehner base-hit, and scored on Hendrix's third double of the season.

Yankees starting pitcher Matt Borens struggled. He went only three innings allowing nine hits, five runs, one walk, and striking out one. Jose Mesa (W, 1-0) stopped the bleeding with three shutout innings out of the bullpen. Mesa struck out six while issuing only one walk. Josh Roeder also pitched very well in relief. He went 2.2 innings, giving up one hit, no runs, no walks, and struck out five. Michael Schaub recorded the last out of the game.

The Yankees will now travel to Vermont to start a three game series against the Lake Monsters before returning home to face the Hudson Valley Renegades on Thursday at 7 p.m.
