Lowell Spinners News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PENN. - The State College Spikes once again jumped out to an early lead and this time the Spinners could not climb back, falling to the Spikes, 6-3, to conclude the team's six-game road trip Sunday night.
State College (20-21) chased Lowell starter Javier Rodriguez after just two outs. Rodriguez loaded the bases on a pair of walks and an RBI groundout by Casey Grayson plated the game's first run. After a fly out another walk loaded the bases. Jhohan Acevedo, who tripled twice Saturday night, doubled down the line, clearing the bases and giving the Spikes a 4-0 lead. Rodriguez left the game one batter later, exiting on a 2-0 count, before Daniel Gonzalez got out of the inning.
The Spikes added a run in the second inning, taking advantage of a leadoff single. After an out, State College plated a run on a wild force out to expand their lead to 5-0.
Lowell (22-20) got on the board in the fourth inning after loading the bases to start the inning. Kyri Washington delivered a bases clearing double to cut the deficit to two.
The Spikes added an insurance run in the seventh, expanding their lead to 6-3. The Spinners had a chance to pull even in the ninth, loading the bases with no outs, but Jeremy Rivera grounded into a 1-2-3 double play and Victor Acosta flew out to end it.
Acosta led the way for the Spinners offensively with a three-hit night, including two doubles. Washington added all three Spinners RBI in the loss.
Rodriguez (0-3, 7.27) did not get out of the first inning, allowing four runs on two hits and four walks. Gonzalez went 5.2, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk, striking out three. Trevor Kelley pitched 1.2 scoreless to give the Spinners a chance at a comeback.
Despite the loss, the Spinners finish the road trip with a 4-2 record and head back to LeLacheur Park for a six-game homestand starting Monday night against Brooklyn. Kevin Steen, fresh up from the GCL Red Sox, is slated to get the ball for a 7:05pm first pitch.
