Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
WILLIAMSPORT, PA --- Jose Pujols and Josh Tobias each had a two-run double to help lead the league-leading Williamsport Crosscutters to a 7-4 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Sunday evening at Bowman Field.
Tied at one in the fourth inning, Williamsport took the lead on a walk, single and Pujols' 13th double to score a pair of runs off Vermont reliever Derek De Young. The Crosscutters scored three more times in the fifth inning off Kevin Ferreras on a Mark Laird RBI single and Tobias' two-run double for a 6-1 advantage.
Vermont was able to cut into the deficit with three runs in the top of the seventh, beginning with Ryan Howell's third home run of the season leading off the inning. One out later Richie Martin was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a Seth Brown's 10th double of the season before scoring on a Chris Iriart sacrifice fly, his team-leading 30th RBI. Brett Siddall followed with an RBI double to left field to plate Brown to cut the Crosscutters lead to 6-4.
Williamsport got one of the runs back in the bottom of the seventh as Luis Espiritu led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on Zach Coppola's third hit and then scored as he and Coppola pulled off a double steal. The Crosscutters and Lake Monsters both had three stolen bases in the game, the first time this season that Vermont had three steals in one game (Lake Monsters five steals in last two games after just 12 in first 39).
De Young (0-1) took the loss with the two runs allowed in the fourth inning after starter Kyle Freidrichs had given up one unearned run on one hit over the first three innings. Crosscutters reliever Kenny Koplove (1-1) earned the win despite allowing the three runs on three hits in the seventh over his four innings of relief. Anthony Sequeira gave up just a two-out walk in the ninth inning to earn his fourth save.
The Lake Monsters (17-24) wrapped up their six-game roadtrip with a 3-3 record by winning two-of-three at State College and dropping two-of-three at Williamport (27-15), where the Crosscutters are now 19-7 overall at Bowman Field.
Vermont returns to historic Centennial Field to begin a six-game homestand on Monday at 7:05 pm against the Staten Island Yankees. The homestand, which includes three games against both the Yankees and Brooklyn Cyclones, runs through Saturday with ALS Awareness Night (Mon), Disney World trip giveaway (Tues), Cancer Awareness Night (Wed), Champ's Birthday (Thurs), Summer of Love (Fri) and Burton Backpack giveaway (Sat).
