Castro Continues Trend of '09 TinCaps Making Majors
July 8, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - Former TinCaps pitcher Simon Castro made his Major League Baseball debut for the Chicago White Sox Friday night. With his big league appearance, Castro became the 10th member of Fort Wayne's 2009 championship squad to reach the majors, and the 116th former Wizard or TinCaps player overall to reach the show.
Castro not only led the 2009 TinCaps in strikeouts with 157, but the entire Midwest League. No one else in the league struck out more than 140 that year. The native of the Dominican Republic limited opponents to a .226 batting average, which was second lowest in the 16-team league. In his 27 starts that year, Castro struck out a league-best average of 10.17 batters per nine innings. Castro finished 2009 with 10 wins and a 3.33 ERA over 140.1 innings.
Since his season in Fort Wayne as a 21-year old, Castro went on to pitch for Double-A San Antonio for most of 2010. The 6'5" right-hander also made two Triple-A appearances with Portland in 2010. In 2011, Castro again threw for San Antonio, as well as Triple-A Tucson. Following the '11 season, Castro was traded from San Diego to the Chicago White Sox as part of the deal that made Carlos Quentin a Padre. In Chicago's system, Castro pitched primarily for Double-A Birmingham in 2012. Prior to his promotion to the White Sox, Castro was working for Triple-A Charlotte, sporting a 3-6 record and 4.92 ERA.
Despite having only made eight relief appearances in his career (while making 146 starts), Castro is in the bullpen for the White Sox.
Castro joins the company of Mat Latos, Blake Tekotte, Anthony Bass, James Darnell, Andy Parrino, Brad Bach, Ali Solis, Erik Davis, and Jaff Decker as 2009 TinCaps who have broken into the big leagues.
Previously this year, former TinCaps Jedd Gyorko (San Diego), Nate Freiman (Oakland), Davis (Washington), and Decker (San Diego) also made their big league debuts.
