Chiefs Shutout Snappers to Close Series

Peoria, Il- The Peoria Chiefs scored early and often for the second game in a row en route to an 8-0 shutout victory over the Beloit Snappers on Monday night. It was the Chiefs fourth win in a row against the Snappers, as they moved their record to 47-38 on the year and 9-9 heading into an off day and a six-game road trip.

The Chiefs jumped out to an early lead scoring three runs in the first inning against Dakota Bacus. Nick Martini led off with a single and moved to second on a Jeremy Schaffer base-knock. Jordan Walton doubled in Martini and Jacob Wilson drove in Schaffer with a two-bagger of his own. Patrick Wisdom knocked in Wilson with a single, putting the Chiefs up 3-0.

The Chiefs maintained momentum with two more runs in the second inning. With one out Gerwuins Velazco singled and reached second on a Martini ground out. CJ. McElroy drove home Velazco with a RBI double and advanced to third on Bacus's strike three- wild pitch with Schaffer up. With runners at the corners Walton singled to plate McElroy, but Schaffer was thrown out advancing to third to end the inning with the Chiefs up 5-0.

The Snappers couldn't figure out Cory Jones as their only real threat came in the fifth inning. Ryan Matthews led off the frame with a walk and Brett Vertigan moved him to third with a double, Beloit's first hit of the game. With two in scoring position, Jones got Aaron Shipman to fly out and struck out Daniel Robertson to get out of the frame and preserve the 5-0 lead.

Peoria scored three more runs in the seventh inning. With Austin House in the game Walton led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a Wilson walk. After a wild pitch, Wisdom singled to center to score both Walton and Wisdom to put the Chiefs up 7-0. Tyler Vail replaced House with two on and Wisdom advanced to third as Tilson grounded into a double play. Velazco singled to right to score Wisdom and put the Chiefs up 8-0, which would ultimately be the final score.

Jones (5-1) tossed six innings, giving up no runs on two hits and three walks while striking out five. Sam Tuivailala tossed one perfect inning while striking out three. Joe Scanio gave up no runs on no hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Zach Russell tossed one inning without allowing a hit and walking one while fanning three.
